The Rise of 'Bleisure' Travel
The term for this trend is 'bleisure'—a portmanteau of business and leisure. It involves extending a work trip to relax, explore a new city, or spend time with family and friends. Once a niche perk, it has rapidly become mainstream. Recent data shows
that a significant majority of corporate travellers, around 84%, plan to add personal time to their next business trip. In India, the trend is even more pronounced, with professionals reportedly taking more bleisure trips on average than their global counterparts. This shift is fuelled by a desire to make business travel more rewarding and less of a disruption to personal life. In fact, many employees now see it as a key factor, with some having turned down work trips that didn't offer the chance for some personal time.
A New Work-Life Equation
A major driver behind the bleisure boom is the evolution of work culture itself. The rise of hybrid and remote work has blurred the traditional boundaries between professional and personal life, empowering employees to seek better integration. In India, where professionals often face long work hours and urban burnout, the idea of blending work with travel offers a welcome escape. Instead of viewing business trips as a necessary evil that steals time from family and personal pursuits, employees are reframing them as opportunities. Adding a weekend getaway allows them to recharge, combat travel fatigue, and return to work feeling refreshed rather than drained.
The Practical and Financial Perks
The logic behind extending a work trip is also deeply practical. The most significant expense of any trip—the airfare—is already covered by the employer. This allows the employee to enjoy a mini-vacation for the cost of just a few extra nights' accommodation and meals. For many, this makes travel more accessible and affordable than planning a separate holiday. Most employees (around 82%) even choose to stay at the same hotel for both the business and leisure portions of their trip, simplifying logistics. This cost-efficiency is a powerful motivator, turning a standard work requirement into a personal growth opportunity to explore a new culture or dine at new restaurants without breaking the bank.
Why Employers Are Onboard
While it may seem counterintuitive, many companies are embracing the bleisure trend. In a competitive talent market, offering bleisure as a perk can significantly boost employee satisfaction and retention at a low cost. Companies recognise that a happy, well-rested employee is a more productive one. Allowing for leisure time can reduce burnout and improve morale, making employees more likely to view business travel in a positive light. As a result, a growing number of organisations are formalising their stance with clear bleisure policies. These guidelines typically outline that the company covers expenses for the business portion of the trip, while the employee is responsible for all costs during their personal days. This creates a clear, transparent framework that benefits everyone.
