Productivity growth is the engine of economic progress. It means producing more goods and services with the same or fewer resources. For India, enhancing productivity is crucial for sustaining high growth rates and improving living standards. Artificial
intelligence steps in by automating routine tasks and augmenting human capabilities, allowing workers to focus on more complex, higher-value activities. A recent Goldman Sachs report projects that generative AI alone could lift India's annual labour productivity growth by about 0.4 percentage points over the next ten years. This boost comes from AI's ability to make processes more efficient, reduce errors, and accelerate decision-making across the board.
The Two Faces of AI: Augmentation and Automation
The primary concern around AI is often job displacement. However, current analysis suggests AI in India will be more of a collaborator than a competitor for the workforce. The Goldman Sachs report estimates that while 8-12% of non-agricultural jobs face substitution risk, a much larger share—42-48% of workers—will see their roles complemented by AI. This means AI tools will handle repetitive data entry, analysis, and administrative work, freeing up professionals in sectors like financial services, healthcare, and education to concentrate on strategic planning, client interaction, and innovation. The goal is a 'human + AI' model, where technology enhances, rather than replaces, human expertise.
Sectors Poised for Transformation
The impact of AI will not be uniform; some sectors are set for a more dramatic overhaul. India's thriving technology services and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are natural frontrunners, using AI to streamline operations and deliver more value. Healthcare is another key area, where AI can assist with diagnostics and analyse patient data, improving service speed and accuracy. In agriculture, AI-driven solutions for crop monitoring and yield prediction can significantly boost output. Furthermore, the BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) and retail sectors are already leveraging AI for everything from fraud detection to personalised customer experiences.
The 'Gradual' Journey and Its Hurdles
The headline's emphasis on a 'gradual' lift is important. The path to widespread AI adoption is paved with challenges. A primary obstacle is the availability of high-quality, structured data, which is the lifeblood of any AI system. There is also a significant need for investment in digital infrastructure, including data centres and cloud computing capabilities. Perhaps the most critical challenge is the skills gap. India needs millions of AI-ready professionals, from data scientists to technicians who can implement and manage AI solutions. Government and private sector initiatives are underway to address this through large-scale skilling and reskilling programs, but it will take time to build the required talent pool.
Building a Foundation for the AI Decade
Realising AI's full potential requires more than just technology; it requires a supportive ecosystem. India is actively building this through initiatives like the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence and the IndiaAI Mission. These programs aim to foster innovation, encourage public-private partnerships, and establish ethical governance frameworks to ensure AI is used responsibly. By focusing on creating sovereign AI capabilities, including multilingual models that cater to India's diversity, the country is laying a robust foundation for inclusive growth. The goal is to ensure that the benefits of AI-driven productivity are shared broadly across the economy.
