The Vision Behind Amrit Bharat
Launched to provide affordable and comfortable long-distance travel, the Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast passenger train. Unlike the premium, all-AC Vande Bharat trains, Amrit Bharat services are designed for the common person, featuring
non-air-conditioned sleeper and general unreserved coaches. The core mission is to connect major cities over 800 kilometres apart, particularly on high-density routes, without compromising on modern amenities and safety. These trains employ a clever 'push-pull' technology, with a locomotive at each end, which allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, reducing travel time and providing a smoother, jerk-free journey for passengers.
Connecting Heartland and Financial Hub
The latest expansion introduces significant new direct lines between Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. One major route connects the spiritual city of Varanasi with Pune, a major IT and industrial hub. This service runs from Banaras to Pune's Hadapsar station, taking approximately 30 hours and stopping at key locations like Prayagraj, Jhansi, Bhopal, and Manmad. Another critical link has been established between the pilgrimage centre of Ayodhya and the financial capital, Mumbai. This train will travel from Ayodhya Cantt to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in about 28 hours. Other approved weekly services will connect Gorakhpur to Bandra Terminus and Subedarganj (near Prayagraj) to LTT, further strengthening the rail corridor between the two states.
A Boost for Pilgrims, Workers, and Tourists
These new routes are expected to be a game-changer for a diverse group of travellers. For millions of pilgrims, they provide direct access to religious centres like Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi and the Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The Varanasi-Pune train also offers easier access to Shirdi, with stops at Manmad and Kopargaon. Furthermore, the new services will greatly benefit migrant workers who frequently travel between their homes in Uttar Pradesh and workplaces in Maharashtra's economic centres. By providing direct connectivity, these trains eliminate the hassle and time lost in changing trains, making the journey more convenient and affordable.
What to Expect Onboard
The Amrit Bharat trains are a significant upgrade from conventional non-AC coaches. Passengers can expect a more comfortable journey with ergonomically designed seats and berths, improved ventilation, and better luggage space. Each coach is equipped with modern amenities such as mobile charging points with USB ports for every passenger, foldable snack tables, and bottle holders. Safety and hygiene have also been prioritised. The coaches feature CCTV surveillance, fully sealed gangways for safe movement between coaches, and an aerosol-based fire suppression system. The toilets are modern, modular, and feature sensor-based taps and an automatic odour control system to enhance cleanliness.
