India's Unmatched GCC Dominance
Global Capability Centers, or GCCs, are dedicated offshore units set up by multinational corporations to handle specific business functions. For decades, India has been a favoured destination for these centers, initially for cost-effective back-office
support. However, this role is dramatically changing. India now hosts 180 retail GCCs employing roughly 272,300 professionals, making its ecosystem 34% larger than the next five global peer markets combined. These are not just support centers anymore; they are becoming strategic hubs for innovation, technology, and enterprise-wide decision-making. Global retail giants are increasingly assigning their Indian arms responsibility for core functions like technology platforms, digital commerce, and AI strategy.
AI Transforms the Shopping Experience
The retail industry is undergoing a massive technological transformation, with artificial intelligence at its core. Companies are leveraging AI to personalize shopping experiences, optimize supply chains, forecast demand, and manage inventory with unprecedented accuracy. From AI-powered chatbots providing 24/7 customer service to computer vision systems analyzing in-store foot traffic, the applications are vast and growing. In India, about 73% of retail and consumer businesses report getting real business value from their AI implementations. This tech adoption is fueling the need for specialized hubs, and companies are turning to their Indian GCCs to build and manage these complex AI systems.
A Surge in Demand for AI Talent
The convergence of retail and AI within India's GCCs is creating a significant demand for a new breed of tech professional. Hiring demand in retail GCCs doubled between 2024 and 2025, generating over 52,000 job opportunities in 2025 alone. The focus has decisively shifted towards technology and data-centric roles. Functions like technology, customer success, and supply chain, which currently make up 60% of the workforce, are projected to drive over 80% of hiring demand by 2028. Specifically, roles in AI, data science, machine learning, and analytics are exploding. The share of AI-related roles in overall GCC hiring has skyrocketed, making it the fastest-growing function within the sector.
The Opportunity and the Challenge
For Indian AI professionals, this trend represents a golden opportunity. Roles such as large language model (LLM) engineer, MLOps specialist, and GenAI Ops are becoming common. The competition for this talent is fierce, leading to premium salaries; AI and machine learning professionals with three to six years of experience can command a median annual salary of around ₹46 lakh. However, this rapid growth also presents a challenge: a shortage of senior, experienced AI leadership. Across all 180 retail GCCs, there are only about 320 professionals with more than eight years of AI experience. This gap between ambition and available leadership means that opportunities for rapid career growth are immense for those who can blend technical AI skills with business understanding.
Why India is the Epicenter
India's position as the world's leading retail GCC hub isn't accidental. It's a combination of a massive, skilled talent pool, a mature tech ecosystem, and the proven ability to move from executing tasks to owning global strategy. With AI penetration in its retail GCC workforce already ahead of peer countries, India is becoming the place where AI-led retail strategy is built, not just implemented. The concentration of talent in cities like Bengaluru, which holds over half of the retail GCC AI talent, as well as emerging hubs like Hyderabad, underscores this trend. To fill the talent pipeline, companies are hiring aggressively from outside the retail sector, with over 90% of new hires in the past year coming from IT services, product companies, and consulting firms.
