A Landmark Partnership for Tourism
In a significant move to boost wildlife tourism, IRCTC's West Zone has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Forest Department. Announced around International Tiger Day on July 29, the collaboration, named 'Vandarshan', aims
to simplify the entire process of planning a safari trip. For years, travellers have had to navigate separate, often complex, bookings for train tickets, hotel stays, and highly sought-after safari permits. This new initiative collapses all those steps into a single, integrated package. Officials believe this will not only make the state's tiger reserves more accessible to a wider range of travellers—including families, photographers, and first-timers—but also promote sustainable tourism that benefits local communities.
Exploring Maharashtra's Wild Heart
The initial phase of the Vandarshan initiative focuses on six key protected areas in Maharashtra, primarily in the Vidarbha region. The list includes four prominent tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Bor, and Navegaon-Nagzira. It also features two vital wildlife sanctuaries, Umred Karhandla and Tipeshwar. This selection offers a diverse glimpse into the state's rich biodiversity. Tadoba is world-renowned for its high density of tigers, while Pench offers a classic central Indian jungle experience. The other sanctuaries provide opportunities to see a variety of wildlife, from leopards and wild dogs to a stunning array of birdlife, making these packages appealing beyond just tiger sightings.
What the All-Inclusive Packages Offer
The core appeal of the IRCTC packages is the all-in-one convenience. Each booking covers confirmed train tickets, accommodation, local transportation between the station and your lodging, and, most importantly, guaranteed wildlife safari permits. Securing safari permits, especially for the popular core zones, can be a major challenge, with slots often selling out within minutes of becoming available online. By bundling these permits, IRCTC removes the biggest hurdle for many aspiring wildlife tourists. The initial tours are structured as four-night, five-day itineraries departing from Mumbai's CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. IRCTC plans to offer five distinct itineraries tailored to different interests, ensuring a well-organized and convenient travel experience from start to finish.
The Real Value and How to Book
The true value of the Vandarshan packages lies in the guaranteed access and logistical peace of mind. Travellers no longer need to sync unconfirmed train tickets with non-refundable hotel bookings and fast-disappearing safari slots. While IRCTC manages the entire backend, it gives tourists a single point of contact and a confirmed plan. These curated tours are designed to attract a broad audience, from adventure seekers to those simply looking for a comfortable way to experience nature. To book these packages, travellers can visit the official IRCTC Tourism website. On the homepage, navigating to the 'Holidays' or 'Packages' section will display the various tour options available, including these new wildlife safaris. The platform allows users to view itineraries and book their entire trip in a single transaction.
