An Insatiable Internal Appetite

of thousands of satellites, the company has an immense and growing need for computational power. This extends to its artificial intelligence ambitions, which are critical for everything from autonomous rocket landings to optimising satellite trajectories and network traffic. To handle this, SpaceX has been aggressively building out its own data-centre infrastructure. This vertical integration strategy is a classic Elon Musk move: if you need a critical tool and existing options aren't sufficient or cost-effective, build it yourself. This internal demand was the seed for what is now blossoming into a much larger ambition.
From Internal Tool to Commercial Service
The infrastructure built for internal use has become a powerful asset in its own right. Recent reports and filings reveal that SpaceX is not just satisfying its own AI needs but is actively turning its data-centre capacity into a commercial product. The company has already signed massive cloud-leasing agreements with major AI players. In May 2026, AI firm Anthropic agreed to use the full capacity of SpaceX's 'Colossus 1' facility in Memphis. This was followed in June by a multi-year, multi-billion dollar deal with Google, which will pay SpaceX roughly $920 million per month for access to around 110,000 powerful Nvidia GPUs. The Starshield and Government Angle
A significant driver and early customer for this expanded data capability is the U.S. government. Through its Starshield program, SpaceX offers a secured satellite network tailored for national security, leveraging the Starlink constellation. This service includes Earth observation, secure communications, and processing classified data. In July 2026, reports emerged that SpaceX is in talks with the Pentagon for a potential multi-billion dollar contract to provide data-centre capacity for military AI applications. Such a deal would dramatically expand SpaceX's government revenue and solidify its role as a critical defense infrastructure partner, moving beyond launch services into the sensitive domain of AI and data processing. This government business provides a stable, high-value foundation upon which to build a wider commercial offering.
The Ultimate Goal: Data Centres in Orbit
The company's ground-based data centres, as impressive as they are, may only be a stepping stone. Elon Musk has openly discussed plans for 'Starmind,' a constellation of satellites that function as orbital data centres. The concept aims to solve two of the biggest constraints for terrestrial data centres: power consumption and cooling. In space, solar power is abundant, and radiating heat into the vacuum is more efficient than the complex and costly cooling systems required on Earth. SpaceX envisions a future with up to a million AI-processing satellites, launched efficiently by its reusable Starship, forming a global, space-based supercomputer. This would not only serve AI workloads but could be integrated with the Starlink network to provide ultra-low-latency processing for customers anywhere on the planet.
A New Front in the Tech Wars
By entering the cloud computing market, SpaceX is opening a new front in its battle with other tech titans. The company is reportedly planning to compete aggressively on price, leveraging its unique assets to undercut existing providers. Its ability to pair data-centre services with the global, low-latency connectivity of Starlink creates a unique value proposition that rivals cannot easily replicate. While replacing giants like AWS overnight is unlikely, SpaceX is positioning itself as a disruptive force. The established cloud providers may even become major customers of SpaceX's unique orbital capacity in the future.
