Your All-in-One Ticket to the Wild
Announced on International Tiger Day 2026, the 'Vandarshan' initiative is a landmark collaboration designed to streamline wildlife tourism. Previously, planning a safari trip involved a complicated juggle of booking train tickets, securing elusive safari permits,
and arranging accommodation separately. This new model bundles everything into a single, hassle-free transaction: confirmed train travel, guaranteed safari permits, accommodation, and local road transport. The goal is to make the state's incredible biodiversity more accessible to everyone, from seasoned wildlife photographers to families on their first safari adventure.
What the Five-Day Itinerary Covers
The tours are structured as four-night, five-day excursions departing from Mumbai's CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. IRCTC has designed five distinct itineraries catering to different interests like photography, birdwatching, and general wildlife enthusiasm. While the exact day-to-day schedule varies by package, the core promise remains consistent. After an overnight train journey, you arrive at a station like Nagpur or Gondia, where a vehicle will transfer you to your pre-booked resort or hotel near the designated sanctuary. The following days are dedicated to morning and afternoon jungle safaris in open jeeps, giving you ample opportunity to spot the region's incredible fauna before your return journey.
Six Sanctuaries on the Itinerary
The Vandarshan packages provide access to six of Maharashtra's premier protected areas. The list includes four renowned tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, Pench National Park, Navegaon-Nagzira, and Bor. These parks are famous for their healthy tiger populations and offer a chance to see leopards, sloth bears, and wild dogs. Also included are two vital wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar, often called the 'hidden gem' of Maharashtra. This selection provides a comprehensive tour of the Vidarbha region's wild heart, showcasing some of the most dramatic and wildlife-rich landscapes in Central India.
The Value of a Guaranteed Permit
Perhaps the most significant advantage of these packages is the assured safari permit. For popular parks like Tadoba, safari permits for the core zones open 120 days in advance and are often sold out within minutes. This uncertainty has long been the biggest hurdle for independent travellers. By bundling a confirmed permit with the ticket, IRCTC removes this major planning obstacle. The cost of a single jeep safari can range from roughly ₹5,800 on a weekday to over ₹12,000 on a weekend, so the convenience and certainty offered by the package hold significant value beyond just the monetary savings.
How to Book Your Wildlife Adventure
Bookings for the Vandarshan tours are handled directly through IRCTC's official tourism portal. To find these packages, you can navigate to the 'Holidays' section on the IRCTC Tourism website and look for 'Packages'. The platform will show a variety of rail, air, and land tours. Search for the Vandarshan or Maharashtra wildlife tours to see the available itineraries and departure dates. The all-inclusive nature means that with a single booking, your entire trip — from the train journey out of Mumbai to your jungle safaris and accommodation — is taken care of.
