One Ticket to the Wilderness
Planning a wildlife trip in Maharashtra often involves a complicated juggle: booking train tickets, finding accommodation, and securing elusive safari permits. That's now a thing of the past. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)
has partnered with the Maharashtra Forest Department to launch integrated tourism packages that bundle everything into a single booking. This collaboration, marked by a Memorandum of Understanding signed on International Tiger Day, is designed to make the state’s natural treasures more accessible than ever. The initiative, named VANDARSHAN, aims to provide a streamlined experience for wildlife enthusiasts, families, and photographers.
Which Sanctuaries Are Covered?
The new rail-based packages will initially focus on six key wildlife destinations in the Vidarbha region. These include four premier tiger reserves: the famous Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, and Bor Tiger Reserve. In addition, the packages cover two vital wildlife sanctuaries: Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. This selection provides tourists with access to some of the most biodiverse areas in Central India, known for their significant tiger populations and rich flora and fauna. Notably, two other major reserves in the state, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not included in the initial phase.
The All-Inclusive Experience
The core appeal of these packages is the guaranteed access to safari permits, which are often the most difficult part of planning a trip. For popular parks like Tadoba, permits can sell out within minutes of becoming available online. These new packages eliminate that uncertainty. A single booking covers confirmed train travel (initially on routes like the Vidarbha Express from Mumbai CSMT), accommodation in partner hotels or resorts, local road transfers from the station to the sanctuary, and, crucially, the jungle safari itself. IRCTC plans to offer five distinct curated itineraries, typically structured as four-night, five-day trips, catering to different interests like birdwatching, photography, and family travel.
Boosting Sustainable Tourism
Beyond convenience, the initiative is a significant step towards promoting organised and responsible eco-tourism. Officials believe that by making wildlife destinations more accessible through an established and reliable system like IRCTC, it will encourage more domestic tourists to explore the state’s protected forests. This is expected to not only boost the local economy and create livelihood opportunities for communities living around these reserves but also enhance awareness about wildlife conservation. The partnership aims to position Maharashtra as a top-tier wildlife tourism destination, leveraging the state's incredible biodiversity while ensuring travel is conducted in a sustainable manner.
