E20 fuel simply doubles the ethanol content to 20%, mixed with 80% petrol. The reason you won't find E10 at most fuel stations today is that India has already made a nationwide shift to E20. In a major policy acceleration, the government mandated E20 as the standard petrol blend across the country from April 2026, achieving its target five years ahead of the original 2030 deadline. This move was celebrated as a significant milestone in India's energy transition. Oil marketing companies successfully scaled up infrastructure and supply chains to make E20 the new normal, effectively phasing out E10 from general availability. Today, if you're filling up with standard petrol, you are most likely getting E20.
So Why Is E10 Back in the News?
The recent buzz around E10 stems from high-level discussions about potentially reintroducing it as a parallel option for consumers. In August 2026, reports emerged that the government was in preliminary talks with the fuel industry to make E10 available again alongside E20. This conversation was notably amplified by a public opinion piece from Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran, who suggested that offering a choice could address concerns from the public. The primary driver for this potential reconsideration is feedback from vehicle owners, particularly those with older cars and two-wheelers, about the impact of E20 fuel.
The Consumer Conundrum: Mileage and Compatibility
The pushback against the mandatory E20 shift revolves around two main issues: fuel efficiency and vehicle compatibility. Ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, which means vehicles running on E20 can experience a slight drop in mileage—officials and industry experts estimate this to be around 3-5% for non-compliant vehicles. While this may seem minor, it is noticeable to daily commuters. The bigger concern is for vehicles manufactured before April 2023, which were generally designed to run on E10 fuel. The logistical challenge of stocking three different types of fuel (E20, E10, and premium petrol) across India's vast network of pumps is significant.
