The optional travel insurance from Indian Railways, once exclusive to online bookings, is now available to passengers buying tickets at reservation counters. For just 45 paise, this extension bridges a critical gap in passenger safety. Here’s what it means
for you.
A Major Step Towards Equal Access
For years, the convenience of IRCTC's optional travel insurance was limited to those who booked their tickets online. This left out millions of passengers who rely on physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Following a directive from the Supreme Court, Indian Railways has now extended this facility to all reserved ticket holders, regardless of how they book. Effective October 27, 2026, anyone purchasing a ticket at a counter can opt for this valuable safety net, creating a more equitable system for all travellers. The terms and conditions are identical to those offered for e-tickets, ensuring no disparity in coverage or cost.
The Power of 45 Paise: What You Get
The premium for this insurance is a nominal 45 paise per passenger, inclusive of all taxes. For this tiny sum, the coverage provided is substantial. In the unfortunate event of a train accident or other 'untoward incidents' as defined by the Railways Act, the policy provides significant financial support. The benefits include up to ₹10 lakh for death or permanent total disability, up to ₹7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, and up to ₹2 lakh for hospitalisation expenses. The policy also covers up to ₹10,000 for the transportation of mortal remains. This robust coverage provides a crucial financial cushion for passengers and their families during emergencies.
How To Opt-In At The Counter
The process for counter passengers is straightforward but has one crucial requirement: digital payment. To opt for the insurance, you must indicate your choice on the physical reservation form and provide a valid mobile number. However, because the 45-paise premium cannot be collected in cash due to the lack of corresponding coin denominations, the entire transaction—both the ticket fare and the premium—must be paid digitally. This can be done via UPI, debit card, or credit card at the counter. Once the booking is complete, the policy details will be sent via SMS to the mobile number you provided.
Who Is Eligible for Coverage?
The insurance scheme is available to all Indian citizens with a valid ticket, including those with Confirmed (CNF), Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC), or partially confirmed tickets. The scheme covers all passengers listed under a single PNR if the insurance option is selected. This includes situations where some passengers on a PNR are confirmed while others are on the waiting list. Children between the ages of five and eleven are also eligible for the cover. However, children below the age of five, for whom a ticket with a berth is not mandatory, are not covered under this scheme. The insurance is not available to foreign nationals.
The Crucial Final Step: Nomination
After receiving the policy details via SMS, there is one more vital action required from the passenger: updating the nominee details. The message from the insurance provider will contain a link to their website, where you must enter the name of your nominee. This step is critical because, in the event of a claim, it ensures the compensation is disbursed smoothly and quickly to the designated person. If a nominee is not specified, the settlement process would involve legal heirs, which can be a lengthy and complicated procedure for a grieving family. Taking a few moments to complete this step ensures the policy serves its purpose without delay.
