The End of the 'Cakey' Era
There was a time when the goal of base makeup was to create a flawless, uniform canvas, erasing every pore and blemish. This often meant layering on heavy, full-coverage foundations that felt like a mask, especially in India’s climate. But the days of prioritising
spackle-like coverage are fading. Today, a new philosophy has taken hold, driven by a desire for makeup that feels as good as it looks. Consumers are increasingly seeking out breathable, comfortable formulas that let their real skin texture show through, marking a significant move away from the heavy makeup of the past.
What's Driving the Shift?
Several factors are fuelling this trend. Firstly, there’s the practical consideration of climate. India's predominantly hot and humid weather makes heavy makeup feel sticky and prone to melting. Lightweight, water-based formulas are simply more comfortable for all-day wear. Secondly, the global 'skinimalism' movement, which champions using fewer products and embracing natural skin, has found a strong footing here. This 'less is more' approach resonates with consumers who prefer to enhance rather than hide their features. Finally, social media has played a huge role, popularising the 'no-makeup makeup' look and providing a platform for consumers to see how products perform in real life, not just in polished ads. This has created a more informed consumer who values authenticity and performance.
Meet the New Guard: Tints, Serums, and More
This new era is defined by a new category of products. Skin tints, tinted moisturisers, BB creams, and serum foundations are the new heroes of the makeup bag. Unlike traditional foundations, these products offer sheer to medium coverage that is often buildable, allowing for a customised finish. Many of these are hybrid products, blurring the lines between skincare and makeup. It's common to find them infused with beneficial ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration, niacinamide to even out skin tone over time, and SPF for sun protection. Brands both homegrown and international, such as Just Herbs, Ruby's Organics, RAS, and Maybelline, are actively innovating in this space, offering formulas designed for daily comfort and long-term skin health.
A Better Match for Indian Skin
For too long, finding the right shade of foundation was a struggle for many Indians. International brands often failed to cater to the vast spectrum of Indian skin tones and undertones. However, this is changing. Newer brands and updated lines are offering more inclusive shade ranges. For example, Kay by Katrina entered the market with over 20 shades, and even established brands like Maybelline now offer extensive ranges designed specifically for Indian skin. The formulations are also evolving to be more suitable for Indian conditions, providing a natural, skin-like finish that doesn't feel heavy or look ashy. Brands are developing products that are tested on and designed for Indian skin, ensuring a better match in both colour and performance.
More Than a Trend, It's a Mindset
The move towards lighter makeup is more than just a fleeting trend; it reflects a deeper shift in beauty ideals. It signals a move towards self-acceptance and celebrating individuality. By choosing products that reveal rather than conceal, consumers are making a statement that their natural skin is something to be proud of. This mindset is supported by the clean beauty movement in India, which prioritises safe, non-toxic ingredients and transparency from brands. It's about empowering individuals to define beauty on their own terms, using makeup as a tool for self-expression and enhancement, not as a mask to hide behind.
