The Golden Rule: Book Early
The single most important piece of advice for 2026 holiday travel is to book your flights as soon as possible. While specific 'sweet spots' exist, the overarching trend shows that waiting for last-minute deals on high-demand holiday routes is a gamble
that rarely pays off. According to Google's data, prices for Thanksgiving and Christmas travel are already on the rise, and delaying your booking will likely cost you more. For international trips, the advice is even more stark: book as soon as your plans are firm, as the lowest prices are often found around 89 days before departure, with minimal savings for waiting.
Your 2026 Holiday Booking Calendar
Google's analysis provides specific windows to find the lowest average prices for US domestic flights. For Thanksgiving, which falls on November 26th this year, the best time to book is approximately 34 days before departure. This places the prime booking period in late October. The wider window for good deals is between 21 and 57 days out. For Christmas, the booking window has shifted earlier than in previous years. The lowest prices are now found around 56 days before departure, with the best deals appearing between late October and mid-November. This means travelers should aim to have their Christmas flights secured well before December begins.
Know When to Fly, Not Just When to Book
The day you choose to travel can save you as much money as booking at the right time. The long-held myth of finding cheap flights by booking on a Tuesday or Wednesday has been largely debunked; Google's data shows a negligible 1.4% savings for booking midweek versus the weekend. However, the days you actually fly matter immensely. Departing on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday can save you around 14% compared to flying on the weekend. For the holidays, this means avoiding the peak travel days. Try flying on the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving instead of the Wednesday, and consider returning the following week to avoid the Sunday rush.
Use Price Tracking, Not Guesswork
Instead of manually checking fares every day, let Google Flights do the work. The platform's price tracking tool is one of its most powerful features for holiday planning. You can set up alerts for a specific route and set of dates, and Google will email you when the price changes. If your plans are flexible, you can also track prices for 'any dates' to find the cheapest time to travel. This tool also provides historical price data, showing you whether the current fare is low, typical, or high for that route, giving you the confidence to book when you see a good deal. In 2026, this feature is also integrated into Google's AI Mode in Search, allowing you to ask it to track flights conversationally.
Embrace Flexibility and Other Tools
If your destination or dates are not set in stone, using the 'Explore' map on Google Flights can reveal surprisingly cheap destinations during the holiday period. Beyond dates, consider your route. Nonstop flights are convenient, but they are also about 20% more expensive on average than flights with a layover. Choosing a one-stop itinerary can lead to significant savings. Finally, look for the 'Price Guarantee' badge on select flights. If you book one of these flights and the price drops afterward, Google will automatically refund you the difference up to a certain cap, removing the anxiety of post-booking price drops.
