For generations, the Yamuna has been a silent witness to Delhi's history. Now, the city is preparing to see its lifeline from a new perspective with the launch of a short river cruise, promising a fresh recreational experience for residents.
What is the Namo Yamuna River Safari?
Delhi is on
the verge of launching its first formal river cruise service, named the 'Namo Yamuna River Safari'. This initiative aims to transform a section of the river into a leisure corridor, offering residents and tourists a new way to experience the capital's landscape from the water. Trial runs for the service began on October 26, 2026, with officials inspecting the facilities ahead of a planned public launch. The project is a collaborative effort involving central and Delhi government agencies, including the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Delhi Tourism. The goal is to not only provide a recreational outing but also to reconnect Delhiites with their river in a meaningful way.
The Route and The Ride
The cruise will operate on a designated five-to-six-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, in an area upstream of the Wazirabad barrage. A round trip is expected to take approximately 40 to 45 minutes, making it a convenient short excursion. Each cruise vessel is designed to accommodate up to 30 passengers per trip. Officials have stated that the service is expected to operate at least four trips a day. The journey offers a different vantage point of the city's riverbanks, providing a peaceful escape and a unique sightseeing opportunity.
Onboard Experience and Eco-Friendly Focus
The vessels being used are eco-friendly electric-solar hybrid boats. This choice of technology ensures a quiet and clean journey, minimising pollution and aligning with broader sustainability goals for the river. Passenger safety and comfort are priorities, with the boats equipped with life jackets, an announcement system, and other emergency equipment. To maintain the cleanliness of the river, the cruises will also feature inboard bio-toilets designed to prevent any waste from being discharged into the water. The project aims to provide a modern, comfortable, and environmentally responsible experience for all passengers.
Launch Timeline and Cost
Following successful trial runs that began in late October 2026, the government is aiming to formally inaugurate the service for the public in early November, possibly before the Chhath Mahaparv festival. While the final launch date is yet to be announced, preparations are in their final stages. The proposed fare for the 40 minute cruise has been set at ₹500 per person. In addition to the cruise ticket, there may be a nominal entry fee of ₹50 to access the premises at the boarding point.
More Than Just a Cruise
This river safari is part of a larger vision to develop the Yamuna riverfront into a vibrant public space. The plans include creating a recreational destination around the boarding area with amenities like food kiosks, a restaurant, a children's play zone, and even a musical fountain. The development is inspired by the Sabarmati Riverfront model in Ahmedabad and aims to create parks, walking paths, and cycle tracks along the river in the long term. Officials have stressed that this tourism development must go handward with continued efforts to clean the Yamuna and protect its fragile ecosystem, with a target of seeing a visibly cleaner river in the next couple of years.
