What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new class of train designed to serve the common person, particularly migrant labourers and those seeking economical travel options for long journeys. Unlike the premium, fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat trains, the Amrit Bharat consists
of non-AC sleeper and general class coaches. The core idea is to provide an upgraded, comfortable, and faster travel experience without the premium price tag, bridging the gap between basic passenger trains and high-end services. These trains are easily identifiable by their distinctive saffron and grey livery and are a key part of Indian Railways' strategy to modernise its fleet for mass transit.
Advanced Features on a Budget
What makes the Amrit Bharat stand out is the technology it packs for its price point. The most significant feature is its 'push-pull' configuration, with a locomotive at each end of the train. This setup allows for much quicker acceleration and deceleration, significantly reducing travel time on congested routes. For passengers, this means a smoother, jerk-free ride thanks to semi-permanent couplers that connect the coaches. Inside, the amenities are a major upgrade from conventional non-AC coaches. Passengers can expect cushioned berths, mobile charging sockets with both USB Type-A and Type-C ports, CCTV cameras for security, modern bio-toilets, and sealed gangways that allow for safe movement between coaches.
The Seven New Routes Connecting India
The Railway Board has given the green light to seven new services that will drastically improve connectivity across northern, central, western, and southern India. While launch dates are yet to be announced, these routes connect major industrial and population centres. The new weekly services are: Dhanbad to Coimbatore, providing a crucial link between Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. Charlapalli (Telangana) to Gorakhpur, connecting the south to eastern Uttar Pradesh. Gorakhpur to Bandra Terminus (Mumbai), catering to the high-density migrant corridor. Gorakhpur to Delhi, offering another option to the national capital. Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat), linking Uttar Pradesh with the commercial hub of Gujarat. Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai). Subedarganj (Prayagraj) to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai), adding another connection to the financial capital.
The Bigger Picture for National Mobility
This expansion is more than just adding new trains; it's a strategic move to strengthen India's domestic mobility infrastructure. By connecting labour-intensive regions like Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand with economic powerhouses like Mumbai, Surat, and Coimbatore, the Amrit Bharat network directly supports the nation's migrant workforce. The services are designed to run on some of the country's most high-density routes, offering a reliable and faster alternative that can help ease overcrowding on existing trains. This focus on affordability and connectivity ensures that economic opportunities are more accessible to people from smaller towns and cities, reinforcing the railway's role as the lifeline of the nation.
