A New Era of Affordable Travel
The Amrit Bharat Express is a game-changer for long-distance, budget-conscious travellers in India. Unlike premium services such as the Vande Bharat, these trains are designed specifically for the common person, featuring non-air-conditioned sleeper and general
class coaches. The primary goal is to provide a comfortable and dignified travel experience for a large segment of the population, including migrant workers and students, who rely on the rail network for essential travel. The introduction of these trains aims to reduce overcrowding on popular routes and offer a structured, reliable alternative to unreserved travel on mail and express trains.
New Routes Connecting to Mumbai
In a recent announcement on August 16, 2026, the Railway Board approved seven new Amrit Bharat services, with three of them directly enhancing connectivity to Mumbai. These new weekly trains will originate from key locations in Uttar Pradesh, a state with significant passenger traffic to the financial capital. The new services include the Gorakhpur-Bandra Amrit Bharat Express (15085/15086), the Subedarganj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Amrit Bharat Express (14121/14122), and the Prayagraj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Amrit Bharat Express (20436/20435). These routes will connect numerous important towns like Kanpur, Agra Fort, Satna, Jabalpur, and Nashik Road, providing a direct link for passengers along these corridors.
Inside the Amrit Bharat Coach
Passengers can expect a significant upgrade in comfort and amenities compared to older non-AC coaches. The trains feature ergonomically designed seats and berths, cushioned luggage racks, and mobile charging points for every passenger. Safety has also been prioritized, with CCTV cameras installed in all coaches, an aerosol-based fire suppression system, and sealed gangways for smooth, jerk-free movement between coaches. Additionally, the toilets have been modernized, and the coaches are equipped with radium illumination flooring strips for better visibility at night.
Faster Journeys with Push-Pull Technology
A key innovation in the Amrit Bharat Express is the use of 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the rear. This setup allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, reducing the overall journey time. The trains are capable of reaching speeds of up to 130 kmph. This efficiency means passengers spend less time travelling, a crucial factor on long-distance routes. The semi-permanent couplers between coaches also ensure a smoother, jerk-free ride, further enhancing passenger comfort.
Booking and Fare Information
True to their purpose, Amrit Bharat trains are designed to be affordable. While fares are distance-based, they are structured to be budget-friendly for sleeper and general class travel. Tickets for sleeper coaches can be booked online through the IRCTC website and app, as well as partner platforms. For unreserved general class tickets, passengers can purchase them at railway station counters. As these services are newly approved, passengers should monitor the official Indian Railways website for announcements regarding the inaugural runs and commencement of regular services for these Mumbai-bound trains.
