The Amrit Bharat Concept
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast passenger train aimed at the common person. Unlike premium services, these trains are designed for mass mobility, featuring non-air-conditioned sleeper and general second-class coaches. The core
idea is to provide an upgraded and dignified travel option for long-distance journeys, particularly on high-density routes, without a hefty price tag. Fares are structured to be budget-friendly, reportedly about 15-17% higher than conventional Mail/Express trains, reflecting the enhanced amenities and speed. This initiative directly addresses overcrowding and offers a reliable alternative for millions of passengers, including migrant workers and families.
New Routes Forging Key Connections
In a major expansion announced around August 14, 2026, the Railway Board approved seven new Amrit Bharat services, significantly enhancing connectivity across the country. Several of these new routes directly link the states mentioned in the headline. A key service is the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur Amrit Bharat Express, which will connect Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, with crucial stops in Maharashtra at cities like Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Balharshah. Another significant addition is the Prayagraj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Express, creating a direct weekly link between Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Furthermore, the Gorakhpur-Bandra Terminus service will connect eastern UP with Mumbai, passing through states like Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. These routes strategically connect major urban centres with smaller towns, facilitating easier travel for work, education, and personal reasons.
Technology for a Smoother Ride
A standout feature of the Amrit Bharat trains is the use of 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the rear. This configuration allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, which helps in reducing overall journey time. It also eliminates the need for time-consuming engine reversals at terminal stations. For passengers, this means a smoother, jerk-free ride, thanks to the use of semi-permanent couplers that are also found on Vande Bharat trains. The trains are capable of operating at a maximum speed of 130 kmph, making them a significant upgrade over conventional passenger services on the same routes.
A Modern Passenger Experience
The interior of Amrit Bharat trains has been designed with passenger comfort and convenience in mind. The coaches feature ergonomically designed seats and berths, cushioned luggage racks, and improved ventilation. Every seat is equipped with a mobile charging socket and a dedicated holder, a small but significant detail for long journeys. The toilets are modern, modular, and more hygienic, similar in standard to those on premium trains. Safety has also been prioritized, with CCTV cameras installed in all coaches, an aerosol-based fire suppression system, and sealed gangways that allow for safe and easy movement between coaches while protecting passengers from the elements.
Beyond the Big Three States
The recent approvals extend far beyond just Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra, truly representing a pan-India expansion. The new services connect a diverse range of states. For instance, the Dhanbad-Coimbatore Amrit Bharat Express will link Jharkhand with Tamil Nadu, passing through Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Another service connects Prayagraj in UP to Udhna in Gujarat, creating new travel pathways through Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. This wider network demonstrates a strategic effort to enhance regional integration and support economic mobility across the nation, making long-distance travel more accessible for people in numerous smaller towns and cities.
