We have grown accustomed to AI chatbots that can write an email, generate an image, or settle a bar bet. But their memory is short. Each conversation often starts from a blank slate. Meta's vision, recently articulated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is to create
an AI assistant that transcends this limitation. The goal is an AI with 'personal context' or 'persistent memory'—the ability to learn from past interactions to provide more relevant and helpful assistance in the future. Instead of just being a tool you command, this AI aims to be a partner that understands you, your preferences, and your ongoing projects, whether it's planning a holiday, renovating your kitchen, or managing your work schedule.
What 'Personal Context' Looks Like
In practice, an AI with personal context would move from being reactive to proactive. Recent updates to Meta AI, powered by its new Muse Spark models, offer a glimpse of this. For example, you could ask it to build a half-marathon training plan. A traditional AI might give you a generic schedule. An AI with personal context would connect to your calendar, see you have meetings every Tuesday evening, and adjust the plan accordingly. It could then send you weekly updates, track your progress, and offer encouragement. This persistence is key. The AI would remember you're renovating your kitchen, search for furniture that matches the style you discussed last week, and stay within your stated budget, all without you having to repeat the instructions.
The Race for the Ultimate Assistant
Meta is not alone in this pursuit. The entire tech industry, from Google and OpenAI to Anthropic, is racing to build more capable 'agentic' AI that can perform tasks autonomously. This represents a significant market shift from simply having the most powerful language model to providing the most useful and integrated assistant. For Meta, whose products like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook are deeply embedded in the daily lives of billions, the opportunity is immense. Zuckerberg envisions these personal AI agents becoming everyday companions, helping manage everything from finances and health to personal relationships. This ambition is backed by a massive financial commitment, with plans to spend over a hundred billion dollars on AI infrastructure in 2026 alone.
The Elephant in the Room: Your Data
For an AI to have personal context, it needs access to your personal data. To create your daily briefing, it needs to read your email and calendar. To help you shop, it needs to know your style and budget. This raises profound privacy questions, especially for a company like Meta with a complex history regarding user data. While Meta states that users will remain in control and incognito chat options will be available for private conversations, the fundamental trade-off is clear: more personalisation requires more data. Experts warn that as AI assistants become more human-like in their interactions, people may be more inclined to share increasingly personal information, blurring the lines of consent and data usage.
The Path to 'Superintelligence'
Meta's Chief AI Scientist, Yann LeCun, has long argued that true intelligence requires more than just mastering language. He believes future AI needs to develop 'world models'—an intuitive understanding of how the world works—along with reasoning and planning capabilities. Current models are impressive, but they can't perform simple physical tasks a child can, like clearing a dinner table. The pursuit of an AI with personal context and memory is a step on this much longer road toward what LeCun calls human-level intelligence, and what Zuckerberg has dubbed 'personal superintelligence'. The journey is just beginning, and it's one that will reshape how we interact with technology.
