One of the most significant concerns voiced by educators and developmental psychologists is the concept of 'cognitive offloading'. When children are presented with a tool that provides instant answers, they may learn to rely on it instead of engaging
in the mental struggle that builds strong problem-solving muscles. This can be particularly detrimental for younger students who are in the process of developing foundational cognitive abilities. The process of learning isn't just about arriving at the correct answer; it's about the journey of inquiry, analysis, and reasoning. Over-reliance on AI can shortcut this process, leading to a shallow understanding of concepts. Students might know what the answer is, but not how it was reached or why it is correct, thereby missing a crucial layer of deep learning.
The Social and Emotional Development Gap
Learning is an inherently social process, especially in the formative early years. Children develop empathy, communication skills, and emotional intelligence through interaction with teachers and peers. AI, by its very nature, cannot replicate the nuance of human connection. The Dangers of Inaccuracy and Bias
AI models, including those used in educational tools, are not infallible. They are trained on vast datasets from the internet, which can contain inaccuracies, outdated information, and inherent biases. An AI can present incorrect information with a tone of complete confidence, making it difficult for a young, developing mind to question its authority. This creates a significant risk of children absorbing and spreading misinformation. Furthermore, these systems can perpetuate and even amplify societal biases related to gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors, which could lead to inequitable learning experiences. Global organisations like UNESCO have highlighted the urgent need for rigorous testing and transparency to mitigate these risks, recommending that untested AI tools be avoided in primary education to protect students.

The guidance stresses a human-centred approach, insisting that AI should always be a tool to support teachers, not replace them. Key principles include ensuring human oversight, protecting student data privacy, and demanding transparency from AI providers so that educators and students understand how these systems work. The clear message from these global standards is one of caution, advocating for a deliberate and regulated rollout of AI in schools rather than rapid, unchecked adoption, especially for the youngest and most vulnerable learners.
A Balanced Path for Parents and Educators
The case for limiting AI is not a call for a complete ban. Technology, when used thoughtfully, can offer benefits like personalised learning exercises. The key is balance and active guidance. For parents and educators, this means treating AI as a supplementary tool, not a primary teacher or companion. It involves encouraging children to question AI-generated answers and verifying information from other sources. It also means prioritising hands-on activities, creative play, and face-to-face social interaction, which are essential for healthy development. The goal should be to foster AI literacy—teaching children what these tools are, how they work, and their limitations—so they can become critical and responsible users of technology, rather than passive consumers.
