What is the New Token System?
Indian Railways has introduced a token-based system for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Instead of standing in long, unpredictable queues for hours, passengers will now be given a sequentially numbered
token. This number determines your place in the queue, allowing you to wait for your turn without the physical stress of holding your spot. The system is designed specifically for offline, counter-based bookings and does not affect the online booking process through the IRCTC website or mobile app. The primary goal is to streamline the offline booking experience, reduce severe overcrowding at counters, and improve overall efficiency for both passengers and railway staff.
A Step-by-Step Guide to the New Process
Navigating the new system is straightforward. The key is to be aware of the specific time windows for token distribution. For AC class Tatkal tickets, tokens are distributed from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM, with booking commencing at 10:00 AM. For non-AC classes, including Sleeper, tokens are given out between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM, with booking starting at 11:00 AM. Passengers need to visit the counter during these windows, collect their token, and fill out the reservation form. You then wait for your token number to be called to complete the booking. One of the biggest advantages is that this eliminates the need for two separate visits or queues—one to get a token and another to book the ticket—which was a major inconvenience under previous pilot systems.
Why Was This System Introduced?
The main driver for this reform is the long-standing problem of chaos and the presence of touts at reservation counters during the Tatkal rush. By creating a more organised, sequential process, the railways aim to ensure a fairer chance for genuine passengers. The system is also intended to improve crowd management, making the environment at stations safer and less congested. Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens—around 10 for AC class and 15 for non-AC classes. These numbers can be adjusted based on demand at specific stations. If seats are still available after all token-holders have been served, bookings will open to walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.
New Details and Priority Categories
A significant detail in the new system is the introduction of priority categories for tokens. 'Category A' is for passengers booking tickets for themselves or their immediate family members, and these tokens receive first priority. 'Category B' is for all other passengers and will be served after Category A bookings are complete. To get a Category A token, you must present your own valid photo ID and an ID for the family member that proves the relationship. Furthermore, all tokens are strictly non-transferable; the person who collects the token must be the one to book the ticket. This emphasis on identity verification aims to curb the practice of placeholders and agents dominating the queues.
What You Need to Keep Ready
To ensure a smooth booking process under the new system, it's crucial to arrive prepared. You must carry a valid, government-issued photo identity card. Accepted documents include an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Driving Licence, or Passport. When filling out the reservation form, have the complete details of all passengers—including full names, ages, and any other required information—ready beforehand. Being prepared not only saves you time but also helps the queue move faster for everyone. Remember, the token only secures your spot in the line; you still need all the correct documentation and information to successfully book your ticket when your number is called.
