From SOS Treatment to Daily Ritual
For years, lip care in India was a seasonal affair. A simple, functional balm, often from a trusted pharmacy brand, was pulled out to soothe dry or chapped lips during harsh winters or dry summers. It was a solution, not a ritual. Today, that has fundamentally
changed. The Indian lip care market is experiencing a renaissance, projected to grow significantly, with one report expecting a CAGR of over 6% between 2026 and 2034. This growth isn't just about selling more basic balms; it signifies a move towards a daily, deliberate act of self-care. Consumers are now treating the skin on their lips with the same attention they give the rest of their face, recognising it as a distinct and vulnerable area that needs consistent nourishment.
The 'Skinification' of Everything
A major force behind this trend is 'skinification'—the infusion of skincare ingredients and philosophies into makeup and other beauty products. Indian consumers, who are more ingredient-conscious than ever, now look for lip products with active ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration, peptides for barrier support, and SPF for sun protection. This blurs the lines between makeup and skincare. A tinted lip product is no longer just for colour; it's expected to moisturise, protect, and even repair. This demand for multitasking, performance-driven products is particularly strong among Gen Z and millennials, who seek efficiency and tangible benefits from their beauty routines.
The Social Media Effect
Social media platforms have become the primary engine for beauty discovery in India. A single Instagram Reel or YouTube tutorial can introduce millions to a new trend, product, or technique. Trends like 'glazed donut skin' and glossy, hydrated lips, popularised by global influencers, are quickly adapted and adopted by Indian consumers and creators. This visual-first environment has turned beauty routines into rituals to be shared, with the lip taking centre stage. It's not just about what a product does, but how it looks—in the packaging and on the lips. This has fuelled an obsession with aesthetic, 'scroll-stopping' products that are as photogenic as they are effective. A 2023 survey noted that 47% of consumers discover beauty products through Instagram Reels.
Rise of Homegrown Innovation
The Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) boom has completely reshaped India's beauty landscape. Homegrown brands have been quick to identify the growing demand for sophisticated lip care. They are launching innovative formats that go far beyond the traditional balm, including overnight lip masks, nourishing lip oils, gentle scrubs, and potent lip serums. These brands understand the Indian consumer's desire for clean, vegan, and cruelty-free formulations, often rooted in natural or Ayurvedic principles but presented in a modern, aspirational way. Their agility allows them to respond to trends quickly, offering specialised solutions for concerns like pigmentation and barrier repair at accessible price points.
