The Journey Begins: From Manali to Chikka
The adventure starts not on foot, but with a short drive from the bustling town of Manali to the trek's starting point near Jagatsukh or Khanol. From there, the trail immediately immerses you in nature. The first day's trek to Chikka is a relatively gentle
introduction, taking you along the banks of the gushing Jagatsukh Nallah. The path winds through dense forests of pine, oak, and deodar trees, where the air is cool and fragrant. This section is a true forest walk, with the sound of the river as a constant companion. After a few hours of gradual ascent, you arrive at the campsite of Chikka, a beautiful spot that opens up to offer the first glorious views of the high peaks, including glimpses of Deo Tibba itself.
Into the Open: Chikka to the Meadows of Seri
Leaving the forested canopy of Chikka behind, the second day of the trek marks a dramatic shift in scenery. The trail continues its ascent, and soon the treeline begins to recede. You'll navigate a path strewn with boulders before the landscape opens up into a vast, breathtaking expanse known as Seri. This immense meadow, which was once a glacial lake, is a carpet of green, dotted with an astonishing variety of alpine flowers and herbs. It’s a flat, easy walk across the meadow, allowing you to fully absorb the panoramic views. Icy rivulets crisscross the landscape, and in the distance, the stunning Tainta waterfalls cascade down sheer cliffs. The campsite at Seri offers a feeling of true Himalayan wilderness, surrounded by towering peaks.
The Rocky Ascent: Seri to Tainta
From the gentle meadows of Seri, the trek towards Tainta introduces a more rugged and challenging terrain. The day begins with crossing a stream, where the water can be bitingly cold, before the trail starts to climb steeply through boulders and moraine fields. This section requires careful footing and a steady pace. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes more stark and alpine, with sparse vegetation giving way to rock and scree. The effort is rewarded with increasingly spectacular views of the Deo Tibba massif and its hanging glaciers, which seem to grow larger with every step. The Tainta campsite is located in this rocky, high-altitude environment, serving as the crucial base for the final push and a perfect spot to acclimatize.
The Final Push: To Chota Chandratal and Base Camp
The pinnacle of the trek is the excursion from Tainta to the Deo Tibba Base Camp area and the emerald lake of Chota Chandratal, which sits at an altitude of around 4,480 metres. This day involves an early start and a strenuous climb entirely through moraine fields. Throughout this final ascent, the magnificent peak of Deo Tibba (6,001m) remains in constant view, a powerful and inspiring presence. Reaching the stunning blue waters of Chota Chandratal is a profound reward. The serene lake, set against a backdrop of snow-clad giants like Deo Tibba and Indrasan, is a sight to behold. After soaking in the views and the accomplishment, trekkers typically return to the Tainta campsite for the night before beginning the two-day descent back to Manali.
