What Is Changing at DXB?
Dubai Airports is in the process of a major technological upgrade, rolling out new, highly advanced security scanners across its terminals. This new equipment will eventually eliminate the need for passengers to remove large electronics like laptops and
tablets, or their liquids, from their carry-on luggage during the security screening process. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, the goal is to make the entire security procedure “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient” for the millions of passengers who use the hub. The move is part of a wider strategy to streamline the passenger journey from check-in to departure.
The Technology Behind the Change
The magic behind this convenience lies in Computed Tomography (CT) scanning technology, similar to what is used in the medical field. Traditional airport X-ray machines provide a flat, 2D image of your bag’s contents. In contrast, these new CT scanners generate a high-resolution 3D image, allowing security staff to inspect the contents of a bag from every angle without it being unpacked. This detailed imaging, often enhanced with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help identify items, provides a more thorough security check while significantly speeding up the process. The contract for this upgrade was awarded to technology firm Smiths Detection in May 2025.
The Benefits for Travellers
For the everyday traveller, the benefits are clear and immediate. The most significant advantage is the end of the frantic unpacking and repacking at the security line. Keeping laptops and liquids inside your bag means fewer trays to manage, less chance of leaving items behind, and a less stressful experience overall. This streamlined process is designed to drastically reduce queue times and increase the number of passengers that can be processed per hour. Griffiths noted that the “old days of take your belts off, take your shoes off, and all that sort of intrusion is going to be a thing of the past,” signalling a major shift towards a smoother and more dignified passenger experience.
When and Where to Expect This?
The rollout is already underway. Paul Griffiths has confirmed that some of the new machines are already installed and operational across DXB's terminals as of late August 2026. The implementation is a “gradual, ongoing programme of continuous upgrade” rather than a single switch-over event. The new scanners are being installed across all three terminals as part of wider refurbishment work. While some earlier reports mentioned a full rollout by the end of 2026, the current implementation is being done in phases. This means that for the time being, travellers may still encounter the older style of security check. The key is to follow the instructions given by security staff at your specific lane.

Dubai’s adoption of this technology is part of a global trend towards smarter, more efficient airport security. Several international airports are also implementing similar CT scanning systems to improve both safety and passenger flow. For DXB, the world’s busiest airport for international traffic, enhancing efficiency is crucial. This upgrade, combined with other innovations like biometric check-ins and passport-less immigration, is part of Dubai's broader vision for a seamless, barrier-free travel experience. It marks a significant step towards a future where airport security is less of a hurdle and more of an integrated, unobtrusive part of the journey.
