The Twin Arteries of India's Economy
For an economy that imports over 88% of its crude oil, the journey is as important as the source. Much of this energy flows through maritime chokepoints—narrow straits that act as vital arteries for global trade. For India, two are paramount: the Strait
of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca. Hormuz, the gateway to the Persian Gulf, is the primary route for oil from West Asia. Malacca, connecting the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is the main corridor for nearly all of East Asia's trade and energy supplies, including cargoes bound for India from other regions. Any disruption in these passages doesn't just slow down traffic; it sends shockwaves through global energy markets, threatening to clog the lifelines of India’s economic growth.
Hormuz: The West Asian Flashpoint
The Strait of Hormuz has become a theatre of intense geopolitical conflict. Renewed tensions, including military blockades and attacks on commercial vessels, have severely disrupted traffic since early 2026. With daily transits significantly reduced from their pre-conflict levels, the risk premium on every barrel of oil has skyrocketed. This is not a distant problem for New Delhi. Historically, a massive share of India's crude oil imports—sometimes as high as 80%—has passed through this very strait. Even with recent diversification towards Russian oil, a significant volume of energy and trade remains exposed to this single point of failure. The effective closure of Hormuz throttles a primary supply route, forcing markets to price in a severe scarcity scenario, directly impacting India's massive import bill.
Malacca: A Corridor of Competing Risks
While Hormuz is a military flashpoint, the Strait of Malacca presents a different, more complex set of risks. As one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, it is prone to piracy, armed robbery, and accidents. Recent years have seen a surge in incidents, with attackers often targeting bulk carriers and oil tankers under the cover of darkness. Beyond criminality, the strait is a zone of strategic competition. China has long viewed its reliance on the passage as the "Malacca Dilemma," a critical vulnerability for its own energy imports. For India, any instability here—whether from piracy or heightened naval posturing by regional powers—threatens not only its energy imports from Southeast Asia and beyond but also its entire 'Look East' trade policy.
From Geopolitical Risk to Economic Reality
The headline's price range of $130-$135 for Brent crude, while not the current spot price, reflects the market's reaction to extreme risk scenarios. In July 2026, when hostilities flared, prices spiked to $105/bbl as traders priced in the potential for a prolonged Hormuz closure. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has consistently lowered its global supply forecasts for 2026 due to these disruptions. For India, the economic translation is brutal and immediate. A higher crude price inflates the import bill, weakens the rupee, widens the current account deficit, and stokes domestic inflation. Even without a full-blown closure, the mere threat of disruption causes insurance and freight costs to soar, adding to the landed cost of crude oil for Indian refiners.
India’s Search for a Safety Valve
New Delhi is not sitting idle. The primary strategy to counter these chokepoint risks is two-fold: diversification of suppliers and building strategic reserves. India has significantly increased its oil imports from Russia, altering its traditional dependency on the Middle East. Furthermore, the government has been building a network of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs)—underground caverns storing crude oil to provide a buffer against sudden supply shocks. The goal is to increase the number of days of import cover these reserves provide. Simultaneously, a long-term push towards renewable energy and domestic electrification of transport aims to reduce the fundamental reliance on seaborne crude oil. However, these are long-term solutions, and in the short term, vulnerability remains high.
