A Major Connectivity Overhaul
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recently approved three major multitracking projects for Indian Railways. With a combined investment of Rs 10,783 crore, these projects will add approximately 656
kilometers of railway lines. This expansion is designed to tackle congestion on some of the country's busiest routes, improving mobility and making train operations more reliable and efficient. The initiative is a core component of the government's strategy to decongest high-density networks and strengthen the national supply chain. By increasing line capacity, the projects aim to facilitate smoother and faster movement for both passenger and freight trains.
The States in the Spotlight
This ambitious expansion focuses on crucial corridors passing through eastern and central India. The five states set to benefit are West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The work will span 14 districts across these states, directly impacting regions vital for industrial and economic activity. Three specific projects form the core of this plan: the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda (Bagdehi) fourth line, the Katni-Pendra Road fourth line, and the Bilaspur (Uslapur)-Pendra Road third line. These projects are not just about adding tracks; they represent a strategic upgrade to some of the most important railway routes in the country.
Fueling Economic Growth and Freight Movement
A primary driver for this expansion is to boost freight transportation capacity. These railway lines are essential routes for moving bulk commodities like coal, cement, iron, and steel. The government estimates that the capacity augmentation works will result in an additional freight traffic capacity of 27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). By improving the efficiency of goods transport, the projects are expected to lower overall logistics costs, a key goal for making Indian industries more competitive. This enhanced infrastructure aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on creating integrated and efficient multimodal connectivity to spur economic development.
Connecting Communities and People
Beyond the economic impact, the expansion holds significant promise for millions of citizens. The projects are expected to improve connectivity for nearly 4,790 villages, which have a combined population of around 56 lakh people. For residents in these areas, better rail infrastructure means easier access to major cities, employment centers, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. The upgrades will also improve access to important religious and tourist destinations in the regions, such as the Taratarini Temple and Shri Kshetra Jagannath Temple. The projects are scheduled for completion by the 2029-30 financial year, promising a long-term transformation in regional mobility.
