Why the French Alps?
The French Alps are a world-renowned hub for paragliding for good reason. The region's stunning combination of high mountains and vast valleys creates reliable thermal air currents that allow for long, scenic flights. World-class locations like Chamonix
and Annecy have built a superb infrastructure around the sport, with numerous certified schools and easy access to launch sites via cable cars. Chamonix offers dramatic, high-altitude views of the Mont Blanc massif, while Annecy provides the breathtaking experience of soaring over its famous crystal-clear lake. The season typically runs from late spring to early autumn, offering months of good flying weather.
Is It Really For Beginners?
Absolutely. You do not need any prior experience to take flight. The key is the 'tandem' flight, where you are securely strapped into a comfortable harness in front of a certified, professional pilot. The pilot handles every aspect of the flight, from takeoff to steering and landing. Your main job is to follow a few simple instructions, such as running a few steps for takeoff, and then to sit back and enjoy the incredible views. This makes it an ideal adventure for first-time visitors who want the thrill without needing a pilot's license or extensive training.
What 'Suitable' Means for a First-Timer
The term 'suitable' is less about athletic prowess and more about basic mobility and willingness. Most operators have a passenger weight limit, typically ranging from 25 kg to around 110 kg, to ensure the wing performs correctly. There are generally no upper age limits; seniors often fly, and children as young as four or five can participate. The main physical requirement is the ability to jog for a few steps during takeoff and landing. If you have any significant health concerns, particularly heart conditions or recent injuries, it is always best to check with the operator beforehand.
The Flight Experience: From Takeoff to Landing
Your adventure will typically begin by meeting your pilot and taking a ski lift or shuttle up to a high-altitude launch site. After a safety briefing where the pilot explains the process, you will be fitted into your harness and connected to the pilot and the glider. For takeoff, you will run together down a gentle slope for a few metres until the wing catches the air and lifts you gently off the ground. The sensation is less like falling and more like floating. Once airborne, you will settle into your harness seat and enjoy a serene flight lasting anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the package you choose and the day's thermal conditions. Landing is usually a smooth and gentle process, often requiring just a few steps.
Safety, Cost and Booking Your Flight
Safety is paramount, and certified schools in France operate under rigorous standards set by organisations like the Fédération Française de Vol Libre (FFVL). A standard tandem flight in a prime location like Annecy or Chamonix typically costs between €90 and €180. This price often includes the pilot and equipment, but extras like the lift ticket to the launch site or an in-flight photo and video package may cost more. It is highly recommended to book your flight a few days in advance, especially during the peak summer season. Since paragliding is weather-dependent, it's wise to schedule your flight early in your trip to allow for flexibility in case of postponement.
