What is the Golden Chariot?
Operated by IRCTC in collaboration with Karnataka's tourism authority, the Golden Chariot is one of India’s premier luxury trains. It offers travellers a unique way to experience the heritage, culture, and natural beauty of South India without the hassle
of regular travel planning. Named after the famous stone chariot at the Vittala Temple in Hampi, the train itself is a five-star hotel on wheels. Guests stay in plush, air-conditioned cabins with private bathrooms, and enjoy gourmet meals in two exquisite restaurant cars, a well-stocked bar, and even a spa and fitness centre onboard. The entire experience is designed to immerse you in opulence while whisking you between some of the most spectacular sights the region to offer.
The New Era of Saturday Departures
The latest season, which commenced on October 24, 2026, introduces a significant and welcome change: a predictable schedule of Saturday departures from Bengaluru. This consistency, running until March 2027, simplifies planning for both domestic and international tourists looking to embark on one of the train's curated journeys. The fixed schedule removes the guesswork, allowing travellers to align their calendars and book their dream trip with confidence. All journeys begin and end at Bengaluru's Yeshwantpur Railway Station, making it a convenient hub for this luxurious exploration of the south.
Journey 1: Pride of Karnataka
The flagship itinerary, 'Pride of Karnataka', is a 5-night, 6-day journey that showcases the state's diverse splendours. After departing from Bengaluru, the first stop is for a wildlife safari in Bandipur National Park. The following days are a masterclass in history and culture, with visits to the grand Mysore Palace, the ancient Hoysala temples at Halebidu, and the sprawling coffee estates of Chikamagaluru. A major highlight is the exploration of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stunning ruins and the stone chariot that gave the train its name. The journey concludes with a relaxing stop in Goa to experience its unique coastal heritage before returning to Bengaluru.
Journey 2: Jewels of South
For those wanting to venture further, the 'Jewels of South' itinerary extends across Tamil Nadu and Kerala over 5 nights and 6 days. This route also begins with the royal city of Mysore before heading towards the architectural marvels of Tamil Nadu. Guests will visit the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram and the magnificent Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur. The journey also includes an exploration of the unique mansions of Chettinad. The final leg takes you into 'God's Own Country', Kerala, to see the historic Fort Kochi area and experience a serene houseboat cruise on the famous backwaters before the train makes its way back to Bengaluru.
Journey 3: Glimpses of Karnataka
For travellers with less time, the 'Glimpses of Karnataka' offers a condensed 3-night, 4-day tour. This shorter trip focuses on three of the most sought-after experiences from the main Karnataka itinerary. It includes the thrilling wildlife safari at Bandipur, a deep dive into the royal history of Mysore with a visit to the Mysore Palace, and a comprehensive tour of the awe-inspiring ruins of Hampi. It's a perfect sampler of the region's treasures, delivering a powerful dose of culture and adventure in a compact schedule.
Life and Cost Onboard
Life on the Golden Chariot is an experience in itself. The train features 44 guest cabins, including twin and double-bed options, each with an attached bathroom, LCD television, and dedicated butler service. The two restaurants, 'Nalapaka' and 'Ruchi', serve a mix of Indian and international cuisine, while the 'Madira' lounge bar offers a place to unwind.
