Imagine gliding through the lush Western Ghats, with mist-covered hills and stunning valleys unfolding around you through panoramic windows. This is the Vistadome experience, and it has arrived on the scenic rail routes linking Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
What Makes a Vistadome Coach Special?
A Vistadome coach is a specially designed carriage by Indian Railways, engineered for tourism and sightseeing. Its primary purpose is to offer an immersive travel experience, making the journey as captivating as the destination itself. The standout features include extra-large glass windows that provide an uninterrupted view of the landscape, and a transparent glass roof that allows you to gaze at the sky and scenery above. Inside, the coach boasts plush, comfortable seats that can rotate 180 degrees, allowing passengers to either face the direction of travel or turn towards the windows for a better view. Many coaches also feature an observation lounge at the rear, a standing area with a wide glass pane, perfect for photography and enjoying the receding views. With amenities like Wi-Fi-based information systems, charging sockets, and modern toilets, these coaches elevate train travel to a new level of comfort and luxury.
The Key Route: Madurai to Guruvayur
Southern Railway recently introduced a Vistadome coach connecting the two states on the Madurai – Guruvayur Express (Train No. 16327/16328). This service is particularly exciting as it traverses the breathtaking Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, which winds through the Western Ghats. Passengers are treated to views of dense forests, mountain tunnels, and the iconic 13-Arch Bridge (Pathimoonu Kannara Bridge) near Kazhuthurutti. This trial service began in late October 2026 and is scheduled to run until mid-January 2027 to gauge passenger response. From Madurai (MDU) to Guruvayur (GUV), the Vistadome coach (Train No. 16327) is available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. On the return journey from Guruvayur to Madurai (Train No. 16328), the service runs on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This schedule makes it ideal for a long weekend getaway, connecting the major pilgrimage centers of Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Guruvayur in Kerala.
How to Book Your Vistadome Ticket
Booking a Vistadome coach is a straightforward process, done through the official IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) website or the Rail Connect mobile app. Follow these steps to secure your panoramic seat: First, log in to your IRCTC account. Next, enter your origin and destination stations (e.g., Madurai Jn - MDU and Guruvayur - GUV) and select your date of travel. The crucial step is selecting the correct class. Vistadome coaches are designated with the class code 'EV' (Executive Vistadome). On the booking portal, you may need to select either 'AC Chair Car (CC)' or 'Executive Chair Car (EC)' and then check for trains that offer the Vistadome option. Once you select a train with a Vistadome coach available on your chosen day, you can proceed to the passenger details page and complete the payment. It's highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance, as these coaches have a limited capacity of around 42-44 seats and tend to sell out quickly due to high demand.
Pricing and What to Expect
The fare for a Vistadome coach is premium, comparable to the Executive Class (EC) on Shatabdi Express trains. For the Madurai–Guruvayur route, the fare for the full end–to–end journey is approximately ₹1,875. The price varies depending on the distance traveled; for instance, a journey from Madurai to Kollam costs around ₹1,140. While the price is higher than a standard AC chair car, the unique experience is what draws travellers. Onboard, the atmosphere is geared towards leisure and sightseeing. The rotating seats provide flexibility, and the large windows offer ample opportunities for photography. Given the scenic nature of the route through the Western Ghats, expect a journey filled with picturesque views of greenery, waterfalls (especially during monsoon), and architectural marvels like old bridges and tunnels.
