deep. However, a patent filed in early September 2026 suggests a far more ambitious future where the vehicle doesn't just drive through water, but actively floats and navigates on its surface. Filed with the German patent office by inventor Joerg Kneip, the document outlines a control system for a vehicle to enter a body of water, remain stable while floating, and drive itself back to shore. This moves beyond mere water resistance and into the realm of amphibious capability, a significant leap for any production-based SUV.
How Would a Floating G-Class Work?
The patent doesn't describe a vehicle that is inherently buoyant. Instead, it details a clever, on-demand system. The core of the invention involves removable flotation devices—either inflatable bladders or lightweight foam sections—designed to be installed within the vehicle's wheel arches. These would provide the necessary lift to keep the SUV afloat. An onboard control unit could inflate, deflate, or adjust the buoyancy at each corner independently, helping to stabilize the vehicle against currents or an uneven load. For propulsion, the system would use the wheels themselves. The patent describes how the adaptive suspension could lower the steering wheels deeper into the water to act like rudders. On an electric model like the G 580, the four individually controlled motors could precisely vary the torque and rotation of each wheel—even spinning them in opposite directions—to steer and propel the vehicle on water.
Engineered for Convenience, Not Just Survival
Unlike a dedicated amphibious vehicle, the system is designed for practicality. The patent suggests the deflated buoyancy aids could be stored in the space typically occupied by a spare wheel and inflated using the car’s standard tyre compressor. This implies a system that owners could deploy when needed, rather than a permanent modification. The software-controlled aspect is key, managing everything from maintaining stability in the water to ensuring a smooth transition back to land. The system would control power to each wheel as it makes contact with the shore, preventing slippage and allowing the vehicle to climb out of the water effectively. While the patent doesn't explicitly name the G-Class, the technology aligns perfectly with the advanced architecture of the new electric G 580, which already features the kind of independent four-motor control the patent relies upon.
A Quiet Development for a Reason
So, why the lack of a flashy announcement? Sources familiar with the filing confirm it remains purely a patent application, with no production program currently attached. Automakers frequently patent futuristic ideas to protect their intellectual property long before they commit to building them. This filing seems to be part of a broader exploration by Mercedes into amphibious technology, as another patent from December 2025 also described a vehicle designed to operate on water. Developing this technology without hype allows Mercedes to explore the outer limits of its engineering capabilities without creating premature consumer expectations. It is a strategic move to future-proof its dominance in the high-end off-road market, potentially as a response to amphibious features seen on some new Chinese EVs, while avoiding the pitfalls of over-promising on a concept that may be years away from reality.
