According to recent forecasts from Gartner, this AI-fueled investment is reshaping technology budgets, with spending on software expected to climb 15.5% to nearly $1.5 trillion in 2026. This isn't just about buying off-the-shelf AI tools; it's about re-architecting business processes around AI, which requires massive computational power. As one analyst noted, this isn't a uniform market trend; priorities are shifting, and budgets are being strained to fund these critical AI initiatives.
Building the Digital Factories for AI
AI's immense appetite for processing power has a direct and staggering consequence: an unprecedented boom in data-centre spending. If AI models are the new digital products, data centres are the factories that build and run them. This has led to what Gartner analyst John-David Lovelock calls "the largest infrastructure project ever attempted by humanity." To meet the demand for AI workloads and high-performance computing, hyperscale cloud providers and large enterprises are rapidly scaling their data-centre capacity. Spending on data-centre systems is forecast to explode by a staggering 62.5% in 2026, reaching $822 billion. This includes everything from AI-optimised servers packed with powerful GPUs to the cooling systems and physical buildings that house them. Alongside this, spending on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)—the cloud services from providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud—is also set for strong growth of over 29%.
A Tale of Two Budgets
This flood of investment into AI and data centres means other areas of IT are seeing much more modest growth. The trend highlights a significant reallocation of funds rather than simply an increase in overall budgets. While the headline growth number is a massive 14.2% for total IT spending, the gains are not distributed evenly. For instance, spending on traditional IT services is projected to grow by just 5.3%, while the communications services segment will see an even smaller increase of 4.4%. Even spending on devices like PCs and smartphones, while still growing, is expanding at a much slower rate than the core AI infrastructure categories. This shows that chief information officers are making tough choices, redirecting funds from legacy systems and less critical areas to double down on the foundational technologies of the AI era.

This global trend has profound implications for India, a powerhouse in the global IT landscape. The intense focus on AI and data-centre capacity presents a dual opportunity. On one hand, India's massive IT services industry, including giants like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, is positioned to help global clients implement and manage these complex AI systems. On the other hand, India is rapidly becoming a major hub for data-centre development itself. The surge in global demand for data-centre capacity will likely accelerate investment in the Indian market, creating high-skill jobs in infrastructure management, cloud engineering, and AI development.
