What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new class of train designed to offer an upgraded travel experience for long-distance passengers, particularly in the non-AC sleeper and general coach segments. Unlike premium services, these trains are aimed at providing
an affordable yet modern alternative for the masses. They feature a distinctive push-pull technology, with engines at both ends, which allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, reducing overall journey time. The core idea is to bridge the gap between basic passenger trains and premium services, offering enhanced comfort and speed without a hefty price tag. This initiative targets the bulk of Indian train travelers, including migrant workers, students, and families, making cross-country journeys more accessible and comfortable.
The Seven New Routes Connecting India
The Railway Board has approved seven new weekly services that will crisscross the country, linking major industrial, cultural, and urban centers across multiple states. These routes have been strategically chosen to enhance connectivity and cater to high-demand corridors. The new services are: 1. Dhanbad to Coimbatore: Connecting the key industrial region of Jharkhand with the commercial hub of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, passing through states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. 2. Gorakhpur to Delhi: This service regularises a special train route, providing another crucial link between eastern Uttar Pradesh and the national capital. 3. Gorakhpur to Bandra Terminus (Mumbai): A vital connection for passengers from Uttar Pradesh travelling to Mumbai, passing through major junctions like Agra Fort, Kota, and Vadodara. 4. Charlapalli (Hyderabad) to Gorakhpur: This route will connect Telangana to Uttar Pradesh, passing through Nagpur, Bhopal, and Lucknow, strengthening north-south connectivity. 5. Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): A limited-stop service connecting the important city of Prayagraj to Mumbai via key central Indian cities like Jabalpur and Itarsi. 6. Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat): This train will link Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh with the commercial city of Udhna in Gujarat, running via Agra and Kota. 7. Subedarganj (Prayagraj) to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): Another service from the Prayagraj region to Mumbai, this train will travel through Satna, Jabalpur, and Nashik Road.
Upgraded Onboard Experience
Passengers on the Amrit Bharat Express can expect a noticeable upgrade in amenities compared to conventional non-AC coaches. The trains are equipped with cushioned seats and berths for better comfort on long journeys. For convenience, each coach features mobile charging points for every passenger, foldable snack tables, and improved luggage racks. The coaches are interconnected with fully sealed gangways, which reduce noise and prevent dust from entering, offering a smoother and cleaner travel experience. Safety has also been a key focus, with CCTV cameras installed in all coaches, an aerosol-based fire suppression system, and better lighting for enhanced security and visibility.
A Boost for Non-AC Travel
The introduction of these Amrit Bharat trains is part of a larger strategy by Indian Railways to modernise its infrastructure for the common passenger. While services like the Vande Bharat cater to the premium segment, the Amrit Bharat focuses on elevating the standard of non-AC travel, which constitutes the majority of rail traffic in the country. This initiative acknowledges the need for safe, dignified, and efficient travel options for lower and middle-income groups. By providing a service that is about 15-17% more expensive than conventional mail/express trains but offers significantly better amenities, Indian Railways is creating a new tier of service that prioritizes both affordability and quality. This push is distinct from the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which focuses on redeveloping over 1,300 railway stations into modern hubs with improved facilities.
