The Legend of the Air-Purifying Plant
The idea is immensely appealing. For the cost of a few potted plants, you can naturally scrub your indoor air of harmful chemicals. Lists of the 'best' air-purifying plants, from Snake Plants to Peace Lilies, are everywhere, and they almost always cite
a single, powerful source: a 1989 study from NASA. This research seemed to prove that common houseplants could remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene and formaldehyde from the air, turning our living rooms into lush, self-cleaning ecosystems. This compelling narrative took root, growing into a widely accepted piece of wellness wisdom that continues to shape how we decorate our homes and offices.
What NASA Actually Studied
The legendary NASA Clean Air Study was real, but its purpose has been widely misunderstood. In 1989, researchers were exploring ways to clean the air in completely sealed environments, like a space station. To do this, they placed individual plants inside small, airtight plexiglass chambers (about one cubic meter in size) and injected a single VOC. They then measured how the concentration of that chemical decreased over hours or days. The study found that under these highly controlled, sealed laboratory conditions, certain plants did indeed absorb a significant percentage of the specific pollutants tested. The science was sound for its intended application, but a sealed chamber on a lab bench is a world away from a typical, drafty living room.
From the Lab to the Living Room: A Reality Check
The problem arises when we extrapolate these lab results to our homes. Subsequent reviews and analyses by building scientists have put the original findings into a real-world context. A critical factor the original study didn't account for in a home setting is the air exchange rate—the constant process of indoor air being replaced by outdoor air through windows, doors, cracks, and ventilation systems. This natural ventilation dilutes indoor pollutants far more effectively and rapidly than plants can. Studies have calculated that to achieve the same air-cleaning effect seen in the NASA chambers, you would need an impossibly large number of plants. Estimates vary, but one 2019 review from Drexel University concluded you might need between 10 and 1,000 plants per square meter of floor space to make a meaningful difference.
So, Are Houseplants Useless for Air Quality?
Not entirely, but their role has been overstated. While a plant does absorb tiny amounts of VOCs, the effect in a normal home is negligible compared to simply opening a window or using a mechanical air purifier. In fact, some researchers note that the microorganisms in the potting soil may be doing more of the pollutant removal work than the plant's leaves. Furthermore, poorly maintained plants can have a negative impact. Overwatering can lead to mold growth in the soil, which can release allergens into the air and undermine any minor benefits. For truly effective air cleaning, experts recommend focusing on ventilation and, if needed, investing in an air purifier with a HEPA and activated carbon filter.
