What is the Vandarshan Initiative?
Launched on International Tiger Day 2026, Vandarshan is a landmark collaboration between IRCTC Tourism and the Maharashtra Forest Department. The initiative was created to simplify wildlife tourism by offering an all-in-one travel product. For many aspiring
wildlife enthusiasts, the biggest hurdle has always been securing safari permits for popular parks, which often sell out within minutes of becoming available online. Vandarshan eliminates this uncertainty. With a single booking, travellers get confirmed train tickets, accommodation, local road transfers from the station to the resort, and, most importantly, guaranteed jungle safari permits. This integrated approach makes exploring the state's rich biodiversity more accessible than ever before.
The Six Wildlife Destinations Covered
While the headline mentions six reserves, there's an important distinction to make. The Vandarshan packages cover six incredible wildlife destinations, but these are comprised of four of Maharashtra's premier tiger reserves and two vital wildlife sanctuaries. The four tiger reserves included are Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Bor, and Navegaon-Nagzira. These are complemented by trips to the Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary and the Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. Notably, two of the state's six official tiger reserves—Melghat in the Amravati district and Sahyadri in the Western Ghats—are not part of this initiative. Their exclusion is primarily logistical, as the Vandarshan tours are built around the Vidarbha rail corridor, making these two reserves geographically out of reach for the current itineraries.
Five Curated Routes from Mumbai
The programme offers five distinct, curated itineraries, allowing travellers to choose an experience that fits their interests, whether they are photographers, families, or first-time safari-goers. Each tour is structured as a four-night, five-day journey that originates from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Travellers board the Vidarbha Express, which serves as the main artery for these tours, taking them into the heart of tiger country. While the specific combinations of parks for each of the five routes are designed by IRCTC, they all revolve around this central travel plan. This structure ensures a standardized, reliable experience, regardless of which wildlife circuit you choose to explore.
The True Value: Guaranteed Safari Permits
The single greatest advantage of the Vandarshan package is the guaranteed safari permit. Anyone who has tried to book a jeep for the core zones of Tadoba or Pench knows the challenge. Permits are released 120 days in advance and are often snapped up almost instantly. This high demand can make planning a trip stressful and uncertain. Vandarshan completely bypasses this issue. By bundling confirmed permits into the package, IRCTC and the Forest Department provide a level of certainty that was previously unattainable for many. A single core-zone safari permit can cost anywhere from ₹5,800 to over ₹12,000, depending on the day, so having this included offers significant value beyond mere convenience.
Travel Logistics: From Train to Tiger
The journey is designed for convenience, starting from Mumbai. The Vidarbha Express takes passengers to key railway stations in the Vidarbha region, such as Nagpur, Wardha, and Gondia. From these stations, the Vandarshan package includes dedicated road transport to your designated forest lodge or resort. It's important for travellers to note the last-mile travel times. While Gondia station is conveniently close to Navegaon-Nagzira (about 45 km), reaching the popular Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve requires a road journey of about 140 km from Nagpur, which can take over two hours. All these transfers are pre-arranged and part of the inclusive package, ensuring a smooth transition from the railway tracks to the jungle trails.
