Meet the Urus SE Plug-in Hybrid
The Lamborghini in question is the Urus SE, the first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the brand's wildly successful super SUV. This model represents a monumental shift for a company built on the legacy of naturally aspirated V12 and V10 engines. Unveiled
globally and subsequently launched in India, the Urus SE is not just an update; it's a statement about the future. By integrating a 25.9kWh lithium-ion battery, Lamborghini has ventured deeper into its electrification strategy, proving that even the most performance-oriented brands are adapting to a new era.
The Heart of the Hybrid Beast
At the core of the Urus SE is a re-engineered 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which on its own produces a formidable 620 CV (about 612 horsepower). This is paired with a 192 CV (189 horsepower) electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. The combined output is a staggering 800 CV (roughly 789 horsepower) and 950 Nm of torque. That 25.9kWh battery, located under the floor, isn't just for show. It provides a pure electric driving range of over 60 kilometres, allowing for silent, zero-emission travel in urban environments at speeds up to 130 km/h before the V8 awakens.
Performance Redefined
For Lamborghini, adding a hybrid system was never about just efficiency; it was about enhancing performance. The instant torque from the electric motor helps the Urus SE achieve a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.4 seconds, making it quicker than the standard Urus S. Its top speed is also higher at 312 km/h. This hybrid setup creates a different kind of performance. The electric motor fills in any potential gaps in torque delivery from the combustion engine, resulting in a relentless and immediate surge of acceleration from a standstill. It’s a new dimension of performance that combines the visceral roar of the V8 with the silent, instant punch of electric power.
A Sharper Look and Smarter Tech
The Urus SE isn't just a powertrain upgrade. It features a refreshed design with new, sleeker LED headlights, a redesigned bonnet, and updated front and rear bumpers that improve aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, the cockpit-inspired cabin gets a larger 12.3-inch central touchscreen and new digital instrument cluster displays that provide hybrid-specific information, such as energy flow and battery status. This blend of aesthetic and technological updates ensures the SE feels like the most advanced model in the Urus family.
A Step in a New Direction
The launch of the Urus SE is a key part of Lamborghini's 'Direzione Cor Tauri' (Toward Cor Tauri) strategy. This roadmap outlines the company's multi-billion euro investment into electrification. The plan began with the Revuelto V12 hybrid supercar and now continues with the Urus SE, with the entire model range set to be hybridized. The ultimate goal is to introduce a fully electric Lamborghini in the second half of the decade, with a plan to reduce CO2 emissions across the entire value chain by 40% by 2030. The Urus SE is the volume-seller that introduces this hybrid philosophy to a wider audience, paving the way for the brand's electric future.
