IIT Madras's New Approach to Tech Education
IIT Madras, one of India's top technical institutes, has significantly widened its educational offerings with flexible Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees, including programmes in Data Science and Applications and Electronic Systems. Unlike traditional on-campus
degrees that require cracking the formidable JEE Advanced, these programmes are open to anyone who has passed Class 12 with Physics and Maths, regardless of their age or location. The model is a hybrid one: course content is delivered online, but quizzes and final exams are conducted in person to maintain academic rigour. This structure is designed to democratise access to an IIT-level education. A key feature is the flexibility of multiple exit points; students can leave after a year with a foundational certificate, continue for a diploma, or complete the full four years for a BS degree. The curriculum is developed in consultation with industry leaders, aiming to produce graduates with strong fundamentals and job-ready skills for high-demand sectors like electronics, data science, and embedded systems.
