A New Class of Travel
The Amrit Bharat Express is a relatively new category of superfast passenger train introduced by Indian Railways, designed to cater to long-distance travelers, particularly migrant workers and those seeking budget-friendly options. These non-air-conditioned
trains are engineered for higher speeds and improved comfort, bridging the gap between conventional mail/express trains and the premium, fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat services. The core idea is to provide a significantly better travel experience without a hefty price tag, focusing on routes longer than 800 kilometers or those requiring more than ten hours of travel time. The trains feature a unique 'push-pull' configuration with a locomotive at each end, which allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, ultimately reducing journey times.
The Seven New Routes Unveiled
In a major boost to connectivity, the Railway Board has greenlit seven new corridors for the Amrit Bharat Express. These routes will connect major cities and regional centers across several states. The newly sanctioned services include: Dhanbad to Coimbatore, connecting Jharkhand with Tamil Nadu; Charlapalli (near Hyderabad) to Gorakhpur, linking Telangana and Uttar Pradesh; two services from Gorakhpur, one to Delhi and another to Bandra Terminus in Mumbai; two services from Prayagraj, one to Udhna (Surat) and another to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai); and a service from Subedarganj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. This expansion heavily focuses on improving connectivity for states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand with major economic hubs in the west and south.
What's Different Onboard?
The passenger experience is where the Amrit Bharat trains truly stand out from their older counterparts. The 22-coach trains are composed primarily of sleeper and general unreserved coaches, all built with modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) technology. Key features include cushioned berths, mobile charging sockets for every passenger, reading lights, and CCTV cameras for enhanced security. The toilets are significantly upgraded with bio-vacuum systems and sensor-based water taps. To ensure a smoother journey, the coaches are connected with semi-permanent couplers that prevent jerks during starts and stops. An aerosol-based fire suppression system in toilets and electrical cubicles adds another layer of safety.
The Push-Pull Advantage
One of the key technological upgrades in the Amrit Bharat Express is the use of a push-pull configuration. This involves placing one locomotive at the front of the train and another at the rear. This setup provides powerful and balanced traction, allowing the train to accelerate and decelerate much faster than conventional trains that are pulled by a single engine. The result is a reduction in overall travel time, even with a maximum operational speed of around 130 km/h. This efficiency is crucial on India's congested rail network, as it helps in maintaining schedules and improving the overall operational flow of traffic on key routes.
Part of a Broader Modernisation
The expansion of the Amrit Bharat train network runs parallel to the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a massive undertaking by the Ministry of Railways to redevelop over 1,300 stations across the country. This scheme, launched in December 2022, aims to transform railway stations into modern, passenger-friendly hubs with improved facilities, better integration with cities, and designs that reflect local culture and heritage. The goal is to elevate stations from mere transit points to vibrant city centers. Together, the new trains and modernised stations represent a two-pronged strategy to overhaul the rail travel experience for millions of Indians, focusing on safety, speed, comfort, and affordability.
