glucose monitors (CGMs) among non-diabetic individuals, people are getting real-time data on how their bodies respond to food. Influencers and health apps promise that by keeping this number stable and avoiding 'spikes', you can unlock effortless weight loss and optimal health. The problem is, this narrative often stretches the science. Most studies using these devices are designed to understand specific physiological responses, not to create a one-size-fits-all rule for shedding kilos or running marathons.
Blood Glucose 101: What's a 'Spike' Anyway?
Before we go further, let's clarify what blood glucose is. It’s the sugar in your blood that serves as the main source of energy for your body's cells. Results from a study on pre-diabetic individuals may not apply to healthy young adults. Second, what was being measured? A study looking at short-term glucose response after a meal is not measuring long-term weight loss. Finally, what was the conclusion? Be wary of products or programs that take a narrow scientific finding and blow it up into a grand promise for all-around health. True health is holistic; it’s a combination of a balanced diet with whole foods, regular physical activity, stress management, and adequate sleep.
