India has other high-altitude airports, such as Pakyong in Sikkim, which at around 4,500 feet is an engineering marvel carved from a mountainside. However, Leh's combination of extreme altitude, heavy traffic, and immense strategic importance puts it in a class of its own. While Pakyong is remarkable, it has faced operational challenges. Leh, on the other hand, handles over a million passengers annually and serves as a primary military logistics hub. Other airports like Shimla also have altitude-related constraints but do not contend with the same volume of military and civilian traffic or the severe weather patterns that define Leh's daily operations.
