A New Class of Travel for the Masses
The Amrit Bharat Express is not just another train; it's a strategic initiative by Indian Railways to modernize travel for the common person. Unlike the premium, fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat trains, the Amrit Bharat is designed as a non-AC, low-cost
superfast service for long-distance routes—typically those over 800 kilometres. The service primarily consists of sleeper and general unreserved coaches, aiming to provide a dignified and improved travel experience for students, migrant workers, and families who rely on budget-friendly options. By targeting high-density corridors, these trains are built to alleviate overcrowding on some of the busiest routes in the country while offering a reliable and faster alternative.
The Seven New Connections
The latest expansion approved by the Railway Board introduces seven crucial services connecting north, south, central, and western India. The new routes announced include a much-anticipated service from Dhanbad to Coimbatore, linking the eastern coalfields to the southern industrial hub. Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh gets a significant boost with new connections to Mumbai (Lokmanya Tilak Terminus) and Udhna (Surat). Further strengthening connectivity from Uttar Pradesh, new services will run from Gorakhpur to Delhi and Charlapalli (Hyderabad). Other approved routes include Subedarganj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and another service from Gorakhpur to Bandra Terminus, providing more options for travel to and from Mumbai.
Smarter, Faster, and Smoother Rides
What sets the Amrit Bharat Express apart is its use of advanced 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the rear. This configuration allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, significantly cutting down journey times. Passengers also experience a smoother, jerk-free ride thanks to semi-permanent couplers that connect the coaches. The train is designed to operate at speeds up to 130 km/h, making it a true superfast service for non-premium travel. This technology also eliminates the need for time-consuming engine reversals at terminal stations, further improving efficiency.
Upgraded Amenities for the Modern Passenger
The focus on passenger comfort is evident inside the Amrit Bharat coaches. The trains feature ergonomically designed seats and berths, cushioned luggage racks, and mobile charging points for every passenger. Safety and convenience are prioritized with CCTV cameras in all coaches, modern bio-toilets with an aerosol-based fire suppression system, and fully sealed gangways for safe movement between coaches. Other thoughtful additions include foldable snack tables, radium illumination strips on the floor for better visibility at night, and a public address system to keep passengers informed throughout their journey.
The Bigger Picture: Democratizing Modern Rail Travel
The introduction of these seven new Amrit Bharat services is a clear signal of Indian Railways' dual-pronged modernization strategy. While the Vande Bharat Express caters to the premium AC segment, the Amrit Bharat focuses on upgrading the travel experience for the majority of passengers who use non-AC coaches. This expansion addresses the critical need for affordable yet modern transportation, helping to integrate regional economies and make travel more accessible for millions. It represents a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and efficient national railway network, ensuring that the benefits of modernization reach every class of traveller.
