What is India’s Chokepoint Problem?
As a nation that imports over 85% of its crude oil, India is deeply dependent on the secure passage of maritime trade. A vast majority of this energy supply, along with other trade, must pass through narrow sea lanes known as chokepoints. Any blockage
in these strategic passages, whether due to conflict, accident, or political instability, can send shockwaves through the global economy. For India, the risk is concentrated around two main corridors: the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects to the Red Sea. Simultaneous pressure on both routes creates a 'dual-chokepoint' scenario, a significant vulnerability for India's energy security and macroeconomic stability.
Chokepoint 1: The Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is arguably the world's most critical artery for oil. This narrow waterway, separating Iran and Oman, is the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. It handles about a fifth of the world's globally traded crude oil. A huge portion of India's energy imports from Gulf producers like Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE must transit through this very strait. Estimates suggest that before recent geopolitical tensions, as much as 45% of India's crude imports and a staggering 90% of its LPG imports passed through Hormuz. Even a temporary disruption can cause shipping delays, sky-high insurance premiums, and an immediate spike in global oil prices, directly impacting the cost of energy in India.
Chokepoint 2: The Bab el-Mandeb Strait
The second critical chokepoint is the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Gulf of Aden. This route is essential for trade moving between Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal. While less oil transits here daily compared to Hormuz, its strategic importance has grown. Crucially, it affects not just India's trade with Europe but also the delivery of oil from alternative sources, including Russia. Much of the Russian crude that has become a larger part of India's import portfolio since 2022 travels via routes that intersect this very region, making it just as vulnerable to disruptions there.
The Link to $130–$135 Oil
The threat of Brent crude hitting $130–$135 per barrel is directly linked to the scenario of a simultaneous, sustained disruption at both Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. In such an event, the physical supply of oil is not the only problem. Shipping companies would face longer, more expensive voyages to bypass the crisis zones, increasing freight rates. War-risk insurance premiums would soar, adding to the landed cost of crude. This uncertainty alone drives market panic. Analysts at CareEdge Ratings have specifically warned that a dual closure could push prices into this range. Other market strategists and banks like Citi have also flagged scenarios where prices could spike to $130 or even $150 if disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are prolonged.
India’s Economic Exposure
For India, an oil price surge of this magnitude is more than a headline; it's a direct threat to the economy. Higher crude prices widen the Current Account Deficit (CAD), put downward pressure on the rupee, and fuel domestic inflation. The Reserve Bank of India has estimated that even a 10% rise in oil prices can increase inflation by 0.30% and reduce GDP growth by 0.15%. Key industries like aviation, chemicals, logistics, and cement would face squeezed profit margins due to higher input and fuel costs. Ultimately, the increased cost of fuel and essentials like LPG would hit household budgets across the country.
Building Resilience for the Future
India is not sitting idle. The government's strategy to counter this vulnerability is multi-pronged. One key move has been diversifying crude oil sources, with increased purchases from Russia, the United States, and Latin American countries to reduce over-reliance on the Gulf. Another critical step is expanding the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs)—underground caverns storing crude oil that act as a buffer during supply emergencies. Furthermore, India is enhancing its maritime surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean and encouraging long-term procurement contracts to hedge against price volatility. While these measures provide a valuable cushion, the long-term solution lies in reducing fossil fuel dependence altogether through a faster transition to renewable energy.
