The Vande Bharat We Know Today
Since its launch, the Vande Bharat Express has become a popular choice for travellers heading between the national capital and the holy city of Varanasi. Currently, two chair-car services operate on this bustling route. These daytime trains cover the approximately
760-kilometre distance in about eight hours, with stops at key cities like Kanpur and Prayagraj. While they offer speed and comfort during the day, passengers seeking to travel overnight have had to rely on traditional express trains. That, however, is about to change significantly.
The Big Update: A Sleeper Train Is Coming
The most significant new development is the planned launch of a Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on the Delhi-Varanasi route. This isn't a minor tweak; it's a whole new category of service for one of India's busiest corridors. Instead of a seat, passengers will get a berth for a comfortable overnight journey. This new service is designed to compete directly with popular overnight trains, offering the modern amenities and higher speeds associated with the Vande Bharat brand. The move aims to cater to the immense passenger traffic on this route and offer a premium, time-saving alternative.
Inside the New Overnight Express
The proposed sleeper train is expected to be a 16-coach formation with a total capacity of 823 passengers. Unlike the all-chair-car versions, this train will feature a three-class configuration to suit different budgets and comfort levels: one First AC coach, four AC 2-Tier coaches, and eleven AC 3-Tier coaches. Passengers can expect the standard Vande Bharat features, such as automatic doors, bio-toilets, and modern interiors, but adapted for overnight travel. This includes ergonomically designed berths and ladders, ensuring a comfortable night's rest while speeding towards the destination.
Your New Overnight Schedule
The key advantage of the sleeper is its schedule, which is designed to save travellers a full day. According to proposed timings, the train will depart from both New Delhi and Varanasi Cantt at around 9:20 PM. It will travel via Kanpur and Prayagraj, reaching its destination at approximately 5:00 AM the next morning. This convenient timing allows a passenger to finish a workday, board the train, sleep through the journey, and wake up fresh in their destination city, ready for the day ahead. The final, official timetable is still awaited from the Railway Board.
Speed, Route, and Expected Launch
The new sleeper service will operate on the same route as the existing chair-car trains. The excitement comes from its potential speed. The train is expected to run at speeds between 130 kmph and 160 kmph, depending on track conditions and clearances. Railway officials are reportedly aiming for a launch around the Diwali festive season in late 2026, with trials expected to begin shortly. However, the official launch date, train number, and fare structure have not yet been formally announced by Indian Railways.
The Future: A True Bullet Train
While the Vande Bharat sleeper is the immediate good news, it’s just one part of a much bigger plan. Looking further ahead, a completely separate Delhi-Varanasi High-Speed Rail Corridor is also in the works. This is India's second 'bullet train' project after the Mumbai-Ahmedabad line. It aims to build a new track capable of handling speeds up to 350 kmph, which would slash the journey time to under four hours. However, this is a long-term infrastructure project, with completion targeted for the early 2030s.
