A New Gateway to the Wild
Launched in July 2026, the Vandarshan initiative is a game-changing collaboration designed to make Maharashtra's incredible wildlife more accessible than ever. IRCTC Tourism has partnered with the state's Forest Department to create a series of all-inclusive
packages that bundle every critical component of a safari trip into one seamless booking. The core offering is a standardized four-night, five-day itinerary that takes the guesswork out of planning. These packages are built to handle the entire experience, from rail travel and local road transport to accommodation and, most importantly, the wildlife drives themselves. The initiative was unveiled on International Tiger Day, signaling a strong commitment to promoting sustainable and organized wildlife tourism across the state. The goal is to eliminate the logistical headaches that often deter potential visitors, providing a clear and reliable path into the heart of the wild.
The Core Problem It Solves: Guaranteed Permits
For any seasoned wildlife enthusiast, the biggest appeal of the Vandarshan package is two simple words: assured permits. Securing a safari permit for the core zones of popular tiger reserves like Tadoba-Andhari is notoriously difficult. The booking window typically opens 120 days in advance, and slots are often snapped up within minutes, leaving many travelers disappointed. This high-stakes digital race forces people to juggle uncertain train tickets and non-refundable hotel bookings, all while hoping to win the permit lottery. Vandarshan completely removes this uncertainty. By integrating with the Forest Department, IRCTC guarantees safari access, which is the most valuable part of the deal. Considering a single private jeep safari in Tadoba's core zone can cost anywhere from ₹5,800 to over ₹12,000, the convenience and certainty offered by this bundled approach represent significant value beyond just the monetary savings.
Six Premier Wildlife Destinations
The Vandarshan packages provide access to a curated list of six of Maharashtra's prime protected areas. This includes four of the state's six official tiger reserves: the world-renowned Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench Tiger Reserve (the inspiration for Kipling's 'The Jungle Book'), Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In addition to these tiger strongholds, the packages also cover two vital wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, both known for their growing tiger populations and diverse ecosystems. It is important for travelers to note that two tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not part of the current Vandarshan itineraries. This selection, however, focuses on the highly popular and accessible Vidarbha landscape, which is famous for its high density of wildlife.
What the Five-Day Journey Includes
Each four-night, five-day Vandarshan tour is designed as an end-to-end travel solution. The journey typically begins from Mumbai's CSMT, with travelers boarding the Vidarbha Express. The package includes confirmed train tickets, a major convenience in itself. Upon arrival at key railway hubs like Nagpur, Wardha, or Gondia, the package includes private vehicle transfers to your designated wildlife lodge or resort. Accommodation and meals are part of the bundle, ensuring a comfortable stay close to the park gates. The centerpiece of the trip is, of course, the multiple jungle safaris in open-top jeeps, accompanied by forest department-approved guides. With five distinct itineraries crafted for different interests—such as families, photographers, or birdwatchers—travelers can choose a trip that best aligns with their pace and passion.
Wildlife Beyond the Royal Bengal Tiger
While the prospect of seeing a Royal Bengal Tiger is the main draw for many, the forests included in the Vandarshan packages offer a spectacular array of other wildlife. Tadoba and Pench are not just home to tigers but also have healthy populations of leopards, sloth bears, and dholes (Indian wild dogs). Herds of gaur (Indian bison), spotted deer, and sambar are common sights. The varied habitats, from dense forests to open grasslands and wetlands, also support a rich avian population, making these destinations a paradise for birdwatchers. Lucky visitors might even spot more elusive creatures like the Indian pangolin or four-horned antelope. The included expert guides help in spotting and identifying the diverse fauna and flora, ensuring a holistic and educational jungle experience that goes far beyond a single species.
Planning Your Vandarshan Trip
Booking a Vandarshan package is streamlined through the official IRCTC Tourism portal. Given that the initiative launched in August 2026, these packages are expected to be in high demand, especially with the core zones of the tiger reserves reopening on October 1st after the monsoon closure. It is advisable to plan your trip well in advance. When booking, review the five different curated itineraries to see which one fits your group's interests best. Pay attention to the travel logistics; for instance, a Tadoba package may involve a 140-kilometer road transfer from Nagpur, which is factored into the itinerary. By consolidating the most challenging parts of the planning process, Vandarshan makes a world-class wildlife adventure more achievable for everyone.
