A New Global Fever
The new record, confirmed by the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, surpassed the previous high of 21.09°C set in March 2024. The 1979 date in the headline refers to the beginning of the comprehensive satellite data era, meaning this
is the hottest our oceans have been in at least 47 years of precise, global measurement. What makes this milestone particularly concerning for scientists is its timing. Ocean temperatures typically peak in March or April, after the Southern Hemisphere’s summer. Setting a new all-time high in August is unusual and suggests an acceleration of warming. The oceans have absorbed over 90% of the excess heat generated by human activities, but this new record indicates that this massive heat sink is under unprecedented strain.
The Forces Fuelling the Heat
This record-breaking heat is the result of a powerful combination of long-term climate change and a short-term natural weather phenomenon. For decades, human-driven greenhouse gas emissions have been steadily warming the planet, with the oceans absorbing the vast majority of this extra energy. Layered on top of this is a strong, developing El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean. El Niño is a natural cycle characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific. This event releases a tremendous amount of heat into the atmosphere, influencing weather patterns worldwide. The current El Niño is forecast to be exceptionally strong, potentially the most powerful in decades, ensuring that both ocean and atmospheric temperatures will likely continue to break records into 2027.
What Hotter Oceans Mean for India
For India, a peninsula with a 7,500-kilometre coastline and a population deeply reliant on the monsoon, warmer oceans are not a remote issue. The Indian Ocean is warming faster than any other tropical ocean basin. This trend directly impacts the Indian monsoon, the lifeblood of the country's agriculture and economy. Studies have shown that marine heatwaves in the Indian Ocean can lead to drier conditions over central India while increasing rainfall over the southern peninsula, disrupting established agricultural cycles. The increased ocean heat also provides more fuel for cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, potentially making them more intense and destructive.
An Ecosystem and Economy Under Threat
The consequences extend beneath the waves. Marine heatwaves—prolonged periods of extreme ocean warmth—are becoming more frequent and intense, with devastating effects on marine ecosystems. Coral reefs, vital for marine biodiversity and coastal protection, are extremely sensitive to temperature changes. An underwater survey showed that 85% of corals in the Gulf of Mannar bleached after a marine heatwave in 2020. This ecological damage has direct economic repercussions. India's fisheries, which support the livelihoods of millions, are under severe threat. Warmer waters force key commercial species like sardines and mackerel to migrate to deeper, cooler waters, leading to declining catches and financial hardship for fishing communities.
