What Exactly is Vandarshan?
Vandarshan is a new, all-in-one wildlife tourism package launched by IRCTC Tourism in collaboration with the Maharashtra Forest Department. Announced on International Tiger Day, July 29, 2026, the initiative is designed to simplify the process of planning
a safari trip by combining confirmed train tickets, accommodation, local road transfers, and, most importantly, guaranteed safari permits into a single booking. The primary goal is to remove the logistical hurdles that travellers often face, such as navigating complex permit portals that sell out in minutes or coordinating separate travel and stay arrangements. This integrated approach allows wildlife enthusiasts to focus on the experience itself rather than the stressful planning process.
Which Wildlife Destinations Are Covered?
The Vandarshan packages provide access to six key protected areas in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region. This includes four of the state's six major tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In addition, the packages cover two wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar. It's important to note that two other prominent tiger reserves in Maharashtra, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not included in the current Vandarshan offerings, primarily because they are not located along the rail corridor that these packages utilize.
The All-Important Guaranteed Permit
For many wildlife lovers, the most valuable part of the Vandarshan package is the guaranteed safari permit. Securing a permit for core zones in popular reserves like Tadoba can be incredibly difficult, as they become available 120 days in advance and are often snapped up almost instantly. The cost of a single jeep safari can range significantly, from around ₹5,800 on a weekday to over ₹12,800 on a weekend, including entry fees, guide charges, and the jeep itself. By bundling a confirmed permit, the Vandarshan package offers not just convenience but also certainty, eliminating the risk of planning an entire trip only to find that safari access is unavailable. This assurance is the real game-changer for tourists.
How the Travel Logistics Work
The packages are structured around rail travel, primarily using the Vidarbha Express (12105) which departs from Mumbai's CSMT. The train travels through the Vidarbha region, with key halts at stations like Nagpur, Wardha, and Gondia. From these railheads, local road transfers are arranged to take travellers to their respective wildlife destinations. The convenience of this varies by park. For instance, Nagzira is a relatively short 45 km drive from the Gondia terminus. However, reaching the popular Tadoba reserve requires a longer road journey of about 140 km from Nagpur, as the train does not stop at the closer Chandrapur station. While the promise is a single-ticket journey, travellers should be aware that significant road travel is still a component for accessing some of the parks.
What's Included and What to Expect
The Vandarshan packages are designed as four-night, five-day itineraries that cater to different types of travellers, including families, photographers, and adventure seekers. The published inclusions are consistent: confirmed train travel, pre-booked accommodation, local transfers from the station to the resort and park, and the assured safari permit. While specific pricing has not been detailed, the value lies in the consolidation of these services. Travellers can avoid the stress of juggling multiple booking platforms and payment deadlines for trains, hotels, and safari portals. This initiative not only promotes tourism but also aims to foster sustainable practices and support local communities around the protected forest areas.
