Praia da Ursa: The Wild Beauty
Close to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, lies Praia da Ursa, or 'Bear Beach'. This is not a beach you simply stumble upon; it requires a commitment. Access is via a steep, unpaved trail that winds down the cliffside, a hike that rewards
the determined with one of Portugal’s most stunning coastal landscapes. Two giant sea stacks, said to resemble a bear and her cub, dominate the view, standing against the full force of the Atlantic. There are no cafes, no sun loungers, just raw, untouched nature. It's a photographer's dream and a perfect escape for those willing to earn their solitude. A word of caution: the currents here are powerful, making it a place for admiring the water from the sand, not for swimming.
Foz do Arelho: Two Beaches in One
On the Silver Coast, or Costa de Prata, Foz do Arelho presents a unique dual personality. Here, the calm, shallow waters of the Óbidos Lagoon meet the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean, separated only by a wide sandbar. This creates two distinct beach experiences in one location. The lagoon side is a favourite among local families, offering warm, tranquil waters perfect for children and stand-up paddleboarding. Cross the sand, and you're on a classic Atlantic beach, a popular spot for surfers and those who love the energy of the open sea. The surrounding village provides a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal, and often overlooked, base for exploring the region.
Praia de Odeceixe: Where River Meets Ocean
Marking the border between the Algarve and Alentejo regions, Praia de Odeceixe offers another beautiful union of river and sea. The Ribeira de Seixe flows into the ocean here, creating a horseshoe-shaped beach flanked by dark, schist cliffs. At low tide, the river forms calm, shallow pools on the sand, perfect for families with young children, while the ocean side offers reliable waves for surfers. The beach is part of the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, a protected area known for its pristine landscapes and hiking trails. The nearby village of Odeceixe, with its whitewashed houses and traditional windmill, sits on a hillside overlooking the valley, adding a touch of classic Portuguese charm to this stunning natural setting.
Praia do Malhão: The Alentejo Expanse
For a sense of true scale and tranquillity, head to the Alentejo coast. Praia do Malhão, located just north of Vila Nova de Milfontes, is a vast expanse of white sand and clear water, backed by low dunes. This is a beach that feels endless, offering long, peaceful walks and plenty of private coves to discover, especially if you venture towards the southern end. As part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, its wild character is protected. While popular with a few surfers on days with good swells, its sheer size means it never feels crowded. It's the perfect spot for anyone looking to disconnect and simply enjoy the sound of the waves and the feeling of open space.
