Kungsleden: The King of All Trails
No list of Swedish hikes is complete without mentioning the Kungsleden, or the King's Trail. This legendary 440-kilometre route in the far north is one of the world's most famous hiking paths, traversing the vast, open landscapes of Swedish Lapland. While
trekking the entire length is a month-long commitment, most hikers tackle one of its scenic sections. The most popular part runs for about 105 kilometres between Abisko and Nikkaluokta. This stretch offers a quintessential Arctic experience, leading you through immense valleys, alongside glacier-fed rivers, and past the foot of Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak. The trail is well-serviced with mountain cabins maintained by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), making it accessible even for those new to multi-day mountain trekking. The best time to hike is from late June to September when the weather is milder and the huts are open.
Höga Kustenleden: The High Coast Trail
For a hike that combines dramatic coastline with unique geological wonders, look no further than the High Coast Trail. This 135-kilometre path winds through a UNESCO World Heritage site, an area defined by its steep, reddish granite cliffs and pine forests that plunge towards the sea. The land here is still rising from the sea after the last Ice Age, a process known as post-glacial rebound, creating a truly dynamic and fascinating landscape. The trail is divided into manageable sections, starting at the impressive High Coast Bridge and ending in the town of Örnsköldsvik. Along the way, you'll pass through Skuleskogen National Park, with its deep forests and the famous Slåttdalsskrevan, a dramatic rock crevice. With a mix of wild camping spots, cabins, and other accommodations, it offers flexibility for different hiking styles.
Jämtland Triangle: A Classic Mountain Circuit
If you're looking for a classic, accessible, and stunningly beautiful mountain hike, the Jämtland Triangle is an excellent choice. This 46-kilometre loop in central Sweden is one of the country's most beloved trails, connecting three STF mountain stations: Storulvån, Sylarna, and Blåhammaren. The circuit is known for its relatively gentle terrain, making it suitable for families and less experienced mountain hikers, while still delivering grand views of open fells and distant peaks. Each leg of the triangle is a day's hike, with comfortable lodging and often a restaurant or sauna waiting at the end. The trail is particularly famous for the stretch leading to Blåhammaren, which offers panoramic views and is known for its gourmet dinners—a rewarding treat after a day on the trail. The hiking season typically runs from July through September.
Skåneleden Trail: Southern Sweden's Charm
Showcasing a completely different side of Sweden, the Skåneleden trail network in the country's southernmost province offers over 1,000 kilometres of gentler, but no less beautiful, hiking. Instead of Arctic tundra, you'll find rolling hills, lush beech forests, and picturesque coastlines. The trail is split into several sub-trails, allowing for countless day trips and longer treks. A highlight is the section through Söderåsen National Park, often called "Skåne's Grand Canyon," with its deep ravines and dense deciduous forests. Another popular route follows the dramatic coastline of the Kullaberg Nature Reserve or the sandy beaches and charming fishing villages of the Österlen region. Easily accessible and hikeable for much of the year, the Skåneleden provides a peaceful and pastoral hiking experience.
Sörmlandsleden: A Wilderness Near the Capital
Proof that you don't have to travel far from the city for a true nature escape, the Sörmlandsleden is a massive trail system with over 1,000 kilometres of paths winding through the countryside south of Stockholm. Its accessibility is a major draw, with many sections reachable by public transport. The trail offers immense variety, passing through deep forests, alongside countless glittering lakes, and touching the Baltic coast. You can choose from short, easy circular routes for a quick afternoon walk or connect sections for a multi-day adventure, staying overnight in designated lean-tos or your own tent. It's a perfect option for those looking to combine a city break in Stockholm with authentic Swedish wilderness, offering tranquility and beautiful scenery just a short journey from the capital.
