The Quest for an Indian Strawberry
For decades, India's successful strawberry industry, which is about 85% concentrated in the Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani region of Maharashtra, has relied almost entirely on foreign plant varieties. Cultivars like Sweet Charlie, Camarosa, and Winter Dawn,
mostly developed in California or Europe, have been the backbone of production. However, this dependence creates challenges. Farmers face high costs for imported mother plants, vulnerability to supply chain disruptions, and plants that aren't always suited to local pests and India's increasingly unpredictable weather. To tackle this, India is now pushing to develop its own indigenous, climate-resilient strawberry varieties. The goal is to create berries that can better withstand heatwaves, resist local diseases, reduce costs for farmers, and secure the industry's future.
Inside the Research and Development Hubs
Spearheading this effort are agricultural universities and research bodies across the country. Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), for example, has successfully identified several foreign varieties like 'Festival' and 'Winter Dawn' that are well-suited for the state's climate, helping expand cultivation into non-traditional areas. A more ambitious project involves a collaboration between Mahatma Phule Agricultural University and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. They are using advanced techniques like gamma irradiation to try and develop India’s first truly indigenous variety, though this is a long-term project that could take over a decade to yield results. In the meantime, partnerships are also being formed with international breeders, like Italy's Nova Siri Genetics, to test and commercialise new, resilient cultivars like Melissa and Marimbella in India, offering a medium-term solution.
What This Means for India's Farmers
For the thousands of small farmers who depend on strawberries, these developments are critical. The current model is a high-risk, high-reward gamble. A farmer can potentially double their investment in a good season, but a single bout of unexpected heavy rain or a sudden heatwave can wipe out an entire crop. The annual cost of buying new plants is a significant outlay for small landholders. Domestically developed or better-adapted varieties could lower these initial costs and reduce the risk of crop failure. Furthermore, varieties that are more tolerant to heat, like Winter Dawn, are already allowing cultivation to expand to new, hotter regions like Rajasthan and Bihar, opening up new economic opportunities for farmers outside the traditional belts. While breeding new varieties takes time, technologies like hydroponics and AI-powered weather stations are also being adopted by larger farms to improve yields and manage risks right now.

For consumers, this focus on breeding and innovation promises more than just a steady supply of strawberries. Breeders are not only focused on resilience but also on flavour, size, and shelf life. New varieties could lead to sweeter, more aromatic strawberries that stay fresh for longer. The expansion of cultivation into new regions could also extend the fruit's seasonal availability and potentially make them more affordable as supply chains become more localised. Unpredictable weather has already been shown to affect the size, taste, and market price of strawberries. By developing hardier plants, researchers aim to ensure a more consistent quality for consumers. Ultimately, a self-reliant Indian strawberry industry means more stable prices, better quality fruit, and the joy of savouring locally adapted varieties that are grown closer to home.
