A train journey through the Western Ghats has always been special, but a new travel experience is elevating it. Specially designed scenic coaches are turning the trip itself into the main attraction, offering an immersive way to witness the region’s beauty.
Introducing the Vistadome Coach
Indian Railways is increasingly using Vistadome coaches on its most scenic routes, and the services through the Western Ghats are a prime example. These are not ordinary carriages; they are premium, air-conditioned coaches designed specifically for sightseeing. The key features that set them apart are massive panoramic windows, seats that can rotate 180 degrees, and, most impressively, a transparent glass roof. The goal is to move beyond mere transportation and offer a tourism experience where the journey is as important as the destination. Recently, Southern Railway launched a new Vistadome service on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express, running through the scenic Sengottai-Punalur ghat section as of October 2026.
A Sky View of Natural Wonders
The single biggest upgrade the Vistadome offers is the glass roof. On a conventional train, your view is limited to what’s directly outside your side window. In a landscape as dramatic as the Western Ghats, this means you miss a significant part of the spectacle. With a glass ceiling, passengers get a top-down, panoramic view. Imagine approaching a towering waterfall and being able to look all the way up to its source, or passing under a dense canopy of trees and seeing the sunlight filter through the leaves. This feature completely changes the perspective, allowing you to appreciate the full scale of the mountains, valleys, and forests. Some coaches even feature electrically controlled opalescent glass, which can be made transparent or translucent at the flick of a switch.
Journey Through the Ghats
Several routes through the Western Ghats feature these coaches. One of the most celebrated is the line between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road on the Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru route. This 55-kilometre stretch, often called the 'Green Route', is an engineering marvel with 57 tunnels and over 100 bridges. The train carefully navigates deep valleys, verdant coffee plantations, and misty hills, offering breathtaking views that are especially lush during and after the monsoon. The new service between Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Guruvayur in Kerala cuts through the Sengottai Gap, passing over the historic 13-arch bridge and near attractions like the Palaruvi and Courtallam waterfalls. These routes are transformed into a moving spectacle, best enjoyed from the Vistadome's unique vantage point.
Comfort Meets Unrivalled Views
Sightseeing is the priority, but comfort isn't compromised. The 180ndegree rotating seats are a game changer, allowing you to turn and face the window for the best possible view, no matter which way the most stunning scenery appears. The coaches are equipped with modern amenities, including clean bio toilets, a mini pantry area with a microwave and refrigerator, and charging sockets for every passenger. An observation lounge at one end of the coach provides a wide, uninterrupted view of the tracks ahead or behind. This combination of luxury and thoughtful design ensures the hours spent on the train are relaxing and engaging, not just a means to an end.
Planning Your Scenic Journey
Booking a seat in a Vistadome coach is similar to booking any other train ticket and can be done through the IRCTC website or app. When booking, you'll need to select the 'Executive Chair Car' (EC) or 'Vistadome AC' (EV) class. Fares are comparable to Executive Class on Shatabdi trains, reflecting the premium experience. For example, the full journey on any new Madurai–Guruvayur service costs around ₹1,875. These coaches have a limited capacity of around 44 seats and are in high demand, so it's essential to book your tickets well in advance, especially for travel during peak seasons and weekends. As these services aim to boost regional tourism, they offer a perfect opportunity for a memorable getaway for families, photographers, and nature lovers alike.
