What is E20 Fuel?
E20 is a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Its nationwide rollout is part of India's larger strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions, and support the agricultural sector through ethanol production. The government
has advanced its target for full E20 implementation, making it the new normal at fuel stations. This rapid transition is a key pillar of the National Policy on Biofuels and aims to bolster India's energy security while promoting a cleaner environment. The move has been in the works for years, with ethanol blending percentages gradually increasing over time.
The Mileage Question
The primary concern for many vehicle owners is fuel efficiency. According to recent government statements in Parliament, this concern is not entirely unfounded. Ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, meaning it provides slightly less energy per litre. For some older vehicles, specifically those designed for E10 (10% ethanol) or lower blends, this can result in a mileage reduction of approximately 3% to 5%. Government and Automaker Stance
The government's position is clear: the benefits of E20 outweigh the drawbacks. Officials highlight that E20 is a superior fuel in some respects, offering a higher octane rating that can lead to better anti-knock characteristics and smoother engine operation. The transition has reportedly saved significant foreign exchange and reduced carbon emissions. Automakers have been producing E20-compliant vehicles for the last few years, and these models are designed to run optimally on the new blend. For these vehicles, manufacturers continue to honour all warranty obligations when E20 fuel is used. The government has also ruled out reverting to E10 or unblended petrol, citing the logistical complexity and costs of maintaining multiple fuel supply chains.

For owners of modern cars and bikes (typically manufactured since 2022-2023), E20 fuel should pose no issues, as they were built with compatibility in mind.
