A State on the Aviation Fast Track
Madhya Pradesh is undergoing a significant transformation of its aviation landscape, with a multi-pronged strategy to enhance air connectivity across the state. The central government recently approved a plan to convert ten existing airstrips into full-fledged
airports under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). The first phase targets five locations: Singrauli, Sagar, Neemuch, Chhindwara, and Mandla. This initiative is part of a broader push that includes upgrading current airports and building new ones, such as those planned for Ujjain and Shivpuri. This expansion aims to dramatically reduce travel time, boost tourism, and stimulate economic growth by linking smaller cities directly to major urban centers. In early August 2026, four new routes were launched, connecting Bhopal with Rewa and Patna, and linking both Rewa and Jabalpur directly to Kolkata.
Gwalior’s Grand New Gateway
A cornerstone of the state's aviation upgrade is the new Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Terminal at Gwalior Airport, which commenced operations in late 2024. The state-of-the-art terminal, built at a cost of nearly Rs 500 crore, spans 20,000 square meters and dramatically increases passenger handling capacity to 1,400 per hour. Completed in a record time of 16 months, the new terminal is designed to be eco-friendly and features modern amenities to provide a seamless travel experience. The launch of the new terminal has been accompanied by an expansion of flight routes, connecting Gwalior with cities like Ahmedabad and enhancing its role as a key aviation hub for the region. Airlines like Air India Express are increasing their footprint, operating more weekly flights and connecting Gwalior to major metros.
Jabalpur and Rewa Take Flight
Jabalpur's Dumna Airport has also received a major facelift with a new terminal building inaugurated in March 2024. The Rs 412 crore project included not only the new terminal, capable of handling 800 passengers at peak hours, but also an extension of the runway to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A320. This makes its runway the second-longest in the state. Meanwhile, Rewa Airport has become a key node in the regional connectivity map. Previously unserved, it now operates flights by IndiGo and Alliance Air, connecting the Vindhya region to cities like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore, and even Kolkata. The introduction of these services has drastically cut travel times that previously took over 12 hours by road or rail down to just a couple of hours by air.
The UDAN Scheme and Future Projects
Much of this expansion is powered by the central government's UDAN scheme, which has been extended until 2036 with a target of developing 100 new airports nationwide. In Madhya Pradesh, the scheme is not only helping to convert airstrips but is also funding brand new airports. A significant upcoming project is the new airport in Ujjain, planned ahead of the Simhastha 2028 festival. The government has approved Rs 590 crore to develop the facility near the existing Datana-Matana airstrip, aiming to handle the massive influx of pilgrims and boost religious tourism. This airport will complement the existing hub in Indore, creating a dual-airport system for the region. These projects signal a long-term vision to place an airport within every 100-150 kilometres in the state.

For travellers, this aviation boom translates into more choices, greater convenience, and potentially lower travel times. Direct flights from smaller cities like Rewa and Jabalpur to Kolkata mean residents no longer need to undertake long train journeys or connecting flights via a major metro. The new Bhopal-Patna service provides the first direct air link between the capitals of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Increased airline operations from Gwalior and Indore are also creating one-stop international connections to destinations like Abu Dhabi. While the direct impact on fares depends on airline competition and operational costs, the state government is supporting some routes with Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to ensure they remain operational, which helps stabilize services. This comprehensive upgrade makes it easier and faster to access tourist destinations like Kanha and Bandhavgarh National Parks, the temples of Khajuraho, and the pilgrimage city of Ujjain.
