The King of Fruits Goes Digital
This summer, India’s collective craving for mangoes translated into a significant digital trend. According to a recent report on summer food habits by Swiggy, the demand for mango-flavoured desserts and ice creams saw a remarkable 19.3% year-on-year increase.
This surge highlights a fascinating intersection of tradition and technology, where a deeply ingrained cultural habit is now fueling the on-demand economy. The period between mid-April and mid-June saw millions turning to their smartphones not just to order fresh mangoes, but to indulge in a creative array of mango-based creations, proving that convenience has become the new companion to seasonal cravings.
What's on the Menu?
The 19.3% rise wasn't driven by a single item but by a diverse and delicious menu that showcases culinary creativity. The undisputed champion in beverages was the Mango Lassi, with one delivery platform reporting an average of 1,547 orders for the drink every single day during the peak summer period. But the innovation didn't stop there. Baked goods like Mango Tart topped the charts, while regional specialties also found new audiences. Pune’s famous Mango Mastani, a thick milkshake-like dessert, became a trending item in cities like Nashik, Mysuru, and Mangaluru. Modern twists on classics, including Mango Cheesecake, Mango Gateau, and even Mango Mochi Ice Cream, have also become easily accessible, turning a seasonal fruit into a versatile dessert star.
A Sweet Deal for Businesses
This mango mania is more than just a passing trend; it represents a significant commercial opportunity. For restaurants, cloud kitchens, and delivery platforms, the seasonal spike is a predictable and highly profitable event. Many businesses now plan their summer menus around mango specials, from specialty desserts to refreshing drinks. The data shows extreme cases of this devotion, such as a single customer in Bhopal ordering 120 pieces of Mango Cake, and another in Mumbai spending over ₹16,000 on an order of Mango Gateau. This predictable demand allows businesses to streamline their supply chains and marketing efforts, turning a seasonal fruit into a reliable revenue driver and a key component of their summer growth strategy.
Beyond Just Mangoes
While mangoes were the undeniable stars, the report indicates broader shifts in consumer behaviour during the summer. Overall demand for desserts and cold beverages grew by 19.2% and 20.7% respectively. This suggests a wider trend of consumers seeking comfort and refreshment through on-demand services. Interestingly, while fruit-based items soared, coffee and mocha-flavoured cold beverages also saw a massive 38.4% increase in demand, indicating a parallel trend for caffeinated cool-downs. Furthermore, coconut-flavoured ice cream emerged as another national favourite, with its demand growing by 13.4%, particularly in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
A Trend with Roots
The surge in mango orders is not just a metro phenomenon. While cities like Bengaluru lead in overall demand, the fastest growth is often seen in emerging cities. For instance, the overall demand for desserts saw some of its highest growth in places like Amaravati and Thanjavur, with 63% and 44.1% year-on-year growth respectively. This indicates that the convenience of on-demand food delivery is becoming deeply embedded across the country. It allows people in smaller towns to access trending food items and regional specialties that might have previously been unavailable, effectively democratizing the culinary landscape and connecting everyone to the sweet, shared experience of mango season.
